What did you do in the garden today?

I'm right there with you. Goat soap helps a ton with summer dry skin.

I think we may have discussed this before, but I use Goat Milk Stuff soaps, best stuff ever!

I can shower a couple times a day due to the heat, but my skin doesn't dry up.

We've had gentle rain all morning. I took the tops off the strawberry barrels since I'm not running the irrigation system. Therefore I hope we don't get a hard rain which might wash out the soil. I had a Mara Des Bois strawberry this morning. It was heaven in a bite. I need to pot up some runners of this variety! So delicious...


I mentioned shutting off the irrigation system. There's clearly a leak somewhere because it's using upwards of 170 gallons each time it runs. DH is having a fit about the water bill. I have it split into 2 zones. Each zone runs an hour. I don't have that many emitters on each line. I need to run it on manual and inspect each line/emitter but it's been too darn hot. Plus I've collected just about everything so I just shut it off. At this point it would just be used for maintenance of my perennials and trees. We are getting regular rain so there's no need.

I'm kinda jealous of you guys who are still harvesting. My summer garden is done for the year. Might get another watermelon or two and maybe a few more green beans but everything else is kaput. Will start on fall garden at the end of the month.

My Summer squash are dying, the peppers are barely producing, the German Johnson tomato plants are looking tired, only the plum tomatoes are still fruiting. I think it's heat, tomatoes and peppers drop their blossoms in 90° plus heat.

I do have a few melons ripening.

I want to plant carrots and turnips but it's been so oppressively hot I keep putting it off.

I also use (and make) goat milk soap. It's actually the only thing I will wash my face with...

We line dry our laundry during the summer. This gives our towels a slightly stiff/scratchy feel to them. After taking a shower where you are dirty, sweaty, and itchy, those towels feel AMAZING when you are drying off. Just saying.

My peppers have BER. I keep forgetting to treat it.

Determinate tomatoes are generally done producing because of the high temperature. Blister Beetles have been hard on them in the past few weeks.

Green beans were pretty much done until I pruned them back vigorously and now they are getting a 2nd life.

Watermelon is struggling against squash bugs but still alive and producing. Melons are a bit small. I need to fertilize.

I grew peanuts this year. First time ever. They seem to be going gangbusters. Very prolific and healthy. Gotta figure out when to harvest them...

Raspberries are starting to produce 2nd crop. They don't look great though. Probably need to fertilize these too...

Gathered probably 40-50 lbs of Catawba grapes already. Concords aren't quite ready yet. Hopefully I'll get some of those before the birds get them all.

@TJAnonymous I'd love a pic of your peanuts! I looked into growing them here but it seemed our season is just too short.

Awww…she must be cute and full of personality!

She's not. She hates me & RUNS any time I go near. She's afraid of everyone & everything. Even the other chickens hate her. She is low man & hangs out by herself, well except for the 3 new girls, she tries to bully them but even they just ignore her.

Wow, that brand name is on my "do not buy" list now. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm going to bake, drain, and freeze the 5 spaghetti squash I got. The plants are dead, I need to clean up the raised bed (full of weeds), and see if I can get some peas to produce in what's left of the growing season.

Not sure that brand is out there since Orscheln was bought by tractor supply. Maybe it is. Country Lane. Hutch on the top and a hutch on the bottom.

Good afternoon all. I was a little busy this morning. Picked a few things from the gardens. The green beans are puttering out so I’ll likely pull them in a few days and plant salad greens. I picked the very first chocolate tomatoes, a couple of sweet 100’s, a handful of green beans and an okra pod. Then I did some weed trimming with my new sling cutter and hedge trimmers. It’s been spritzing rain off and on all day. Hopefully we’ll get a nice soaking rain out of this system so the garden gets a good drink. I think I have some of those radish bean like things on the radishes I let go to seed. Mine look like this. Do you cook these and eat them?
