What did you do in the garden today?

I would try tying a chain or really stout rope around it and hook it up to the truck or tractor and pull like there's no tomorrow. Might not remove all of it but at least maybe some of it would fall.

I don't have a tractor. If the tree fell the wrong way, I'm sure it would take off the back end of my old Explorer. I have considered getting some block and tackle setup, but I can't seem to talk myself into investing in all the equipment for one tree. I mean, I'm 62 years old and this is the first time I have a tree that I could not cut down with just a chainsaw. I doubt I would ever use all that equipment for any other tree(s) in the yard.

I used to have a big, thick, long heavy rope for pulling down trees. But it walked off on me. Pretty sure I know who took it. :tongue That would have been perfect for this job.

Put a fire ring around the trunk and burn it down??? LOL

Explosive charge in the trunk?

Nothing in the garden for me today. It's hot! Did some in the house gardening, lol
Gave some very much needed attention to some house plants. Also fed and watered some babies for the fall garden.
Cabbage and broccoli ready to go outside when the heat lets up some

Have you ever tried tomato chips? OMG, so good! I like to use Roma for that.
:eek:I've dried cherry tomatoes, but didn't think to try chips!
Also, my longest chainsaw bar is 16 inches. The tree trunk is wider than my bar. I'm estimating maybe 22 inches round where I would cut it. I have done that, and bigger, trees before without any problems, but this tree has rotted wood going into the trunk, so I don't know how strong/stable it will be. It's the unknown that gives me pause.
Can you cut it in a strategic spot to "encourage" it to come down?
This time things were different this melon turned yellow & split open at the end.
When you look inside the dense spongy inside filled with seeds has changed. The
inside is empty except for the seeds covered with a sweet red covering that the chickens
love.
I thought about trying to grow bitter melon FOR the seeds. Baker Creek had a variety that the seeds supposedly tasted like sweet cherries.

Very little in the garden today. I did water the nightshade garden. I had to rearrange the stuff in my garage for the stove pellet’s delivery. Doing laundry today and just got the other gate post in the ground for the new chicken yard. I started another post hole but I had to stop and tend to the chickens. There’s so many rocks below the surface. That’s life next door to the granite state. Congratulations on the new grand baby @karenerwin. DD is coming over for a little while tomorrow to give me a hand with the new chicken complex. Fortunately we are enjoying somewhat cooler temperatures for these next couple of days. I’m much more productive in cooler temps. Just when you think you’ve seen the worst of the weather ( there were 4 tornadoes in Massachusetts the other day) we get a tropical storm in of all places California and the southwest deserts. Crazy stuff. Hope everyone stays safe.

:idunno Are you talking about an explosive charge in the trunk of the old Explorer or the tree trunk? Can't imagine putting a fire ring around either the tree trunk, or the trunk of the Explorer. The fire ring I have is one solid piece of metal and I don't want to cut it in half.

Cut what you can & pay someone else to own/maintain & use their own equipment to do the rest.

Well, there is nothing left to cut. I'm dealing with a 40-50 foot tall trunk that is about two feet wide at the base. All the branches have already fallen off over the years. It's just one big, dead, tree trunk remaining.

Can you cut it in a strategic spot to "encourage" it to come down?

If I start cutting it, I will have to finish the job. I want to control the fall as much as possible, and certainly do not want to cut into it partially and later have it fall on me when I'm outside mowing the lawn. That would be my luck.

The large hard seeds have a thin red covering of a sweet tart flavor. The yellow melon is not bitter but it's not too good either, it becomes very mushy & your culinary choices are not to very many.

Like the dwarf tamarillo at baker creek, we had to over winter two plants to get any fruit & it tastes weird to me. I was raised overseas, there is very little I can't eat.
One other thing It would take 10 trees overwintered to make any jam or jelly. like the catalog picture shows.

Same with the bitter melon, & like the cucumber the vine starts to die when the fruit ripens. That's why you can't have a bunch of ripe bitter melons for very long.

Last thought. If the wood is still good for firewood. You may be able to get a firewood dealer to come out & get it.

In the trunk of the tree is what I was saying. Keep thinking on it, and hope it doesn't come down on it's own and hurt someone, or bite the bullet and pay a tree service to just drop it, and you take care of the rest.
