What did you do in the garden today?

Too far behind to catch up. Again. Stupid work getting in the way. 🙄

Picked a ton of volunteer sungolds & a volunteer mutant squash. I just don't have it in me to pick anymore green beans. I'll try & remember this when I have to buy them, lol. The volunteer squash has finally gotten powdery mildew, but still no other bugs!

The lettuce is growing well in the greenstalk, I planted some spinach too. I have a frost cover so I'm hoping to have lettuce well into fall/winter.

Super hot out, in the middle of a heat wave. Off to bring the birds some frozen veggies...

The blueberry jam I made the other day turned out too runny so I opened them all up and te cooked them. Now they are too thick. 😣😢😡
Picked a small handful of cherry tomatoes, watered the church garden and picked some tomatoes , green beans and jalapeños.
Now it’s raining. 🤷‍♀️ There was no rain in the forecast
Along this topic... I had several jars of blackberry jelly from 2020 that never set up properly. It's all basically syrup. Someone told me previously to use it on ice cream but that will honestly never happen here. I will probably end up just dumping it....

I would love some rain 🙏🏻 we live in one of the driest area of our country, even with precipitation forecast of 99% we often don’t get rain 🙄 if it rained even though it wasn’t announced, I’d be doing a (happy) rain dance 🥳
Everything is dead or dying here too... Even giant trees with deep roots. We've had less than a tenth of an inch of rain in a month. At least 3 or 4 times over the past 2 weeks we've had big storm systems come through but either drop no rain OR rain all around us but not here. 😑

Neither hubby nor I ever got Covid. Everyone else on our road, vaccinated or not, did.

We got the shots and boosters. And even got flu shots, both of us, for the first time in our lives. I don't know if that has made a difference or not.

Yes, we know how lucky we are. If we could figure out the source of our luck, believe me, we'd share it.
I think, just like any medical outcome, that what you get and the severity of it is dependent on too many epigenetic factors to distill it down to one thing.

I don't do flu shots or Covid shots. Haven't ever... I rarely get sick. Can't remember when I last had the flu.... And I got Covid twice - the Delta strain in Aug 2020 when I got pretty sick and then Omicron strain in January 2021 when it was hardly more than a regular cold. Neither was life threatening.

My DH works for the health department. Constantly around the public and had to investigate Covid cases in the beginning. He has only had it twice too... Same time frames as me. Our 2 kids (hs & college ages) have never had it despite living with us.

So I think there's more to an individual's propensity to contract any illness than just simplification factors such as exposure or vaccines.

Did a little harvesting in the garden early this morning. Also watered the nightshade garden and the corn patch. Had to take DD to the ER. She had a little accident carry trash to the dumpster and needed to get checked out. Of course they were crazy busy with quite a few people that skipped going to their primary care physician. Then there were heat related cases and traffic accidents. Good golly, it’s only Thursday. It was only supposed to be 90F in my area but the thermometer on the bank on the way home to my house read 93F. Ugh! Fortunately there’s a breeze. Some of the chickens are dirt bathing for cooling. Some are foraging Happy news, there’s definitely a yellow squash forming in the corn patch and several baby cukes growing. The bean haul today was nearly a half pound each of pole beans and Lima beans. No fall gardening plans for me. Our first average frost is just a month away. I just want to be done with this season.
Today’s haul.

The Limas are hidden by the mustard greens. One really big okra pod.
