What did you do in the garden today?

We're burned out on eating them too, but my plants are still producing and I have a lot in the fridge.
Does anybody have a good method for making zucchini fries? I tried them in the air fryer, but they stayed mushy and didn't really crisp up. How do you get some of the moisture out of them before you bake or air fry?
I deep fry them. I use a coating mix called Fryin' Magic. A light coating and deep fry and some Ranch dressing to dip.

I suffered from gout years ago. It got so bad I could not walk for almost 2 months. Almost passed out from pain just trying to get to the bathroom. My doctor said gout can be prevented by taking a daily dose of Allopurinol, She was right. I have not had a gout attack for about 8 years.

I asked about not eating certain foods, and my doctor said the problem is in the body not ridding itself of the uric acid. Some foods might increase the uric acid in your body, but the real program was to take the daily medication and eat normally.

So, ask your brother if your canned meats will trigger a gout attack or if he is on medication for gout. I have no problem eating any kinds of foods now that I am taking Allopurinol. Before that, yeah, canned meat might trigger my gout. Now that I take a daily medication, nothing I eat will trigger my gout.

:love It's great that you are concerned about your brother. I would encourage you to talk to him about his current condition. If he is not taking a daily medication for gout prevention, mention to him that gout can be prevented, and life can be so much better for him with medication. As much as I hated to admit that I needed to take daily medication, I would much rather enjoy my life and not be bedridden in pain. My gout was that bad.

I am a nurse, gout is a disease which affects people living in comfortable circumstances….poor ( hungry) people don’t suffer gout …of course there are pills against it, but…as we learned, every medicine has the potential to be a poison, so, if something works, it usually also has a negative impact 😬 I personally would prefer to eat responsibly and not take pills , as long as you don’t overdo it, you can enjoy forbidden food now and then…the best would be to forgo juice, lemonades, beer ( even alcohol free) , most fatty fish and shellfish, little meat or sausage, and to eat lots of veggies , salad and milk products..but we are all human, I totally get if it is way easier to eat well and take the pills 😉 it also takes a few years of diet for the crystals to dissolve , also, your brother may have genetic issues, so…😅
Does anyone know what it is in the canning process that would give canned beef or chicken a higher level of uric acid? Just the high pressure temperature?

I'm laughing... I know he doesn't drink beer or any alcohol and rarely eats vegetables (despite our encouragement) but he does really good at drinking milk (not sure about other milk products, except maybe ice cream...)

Interesting fact that not a problem for the poor, etc.

I would argue that not a problem for the poor, at least in this country.
Foods highly processed are shown to cause/inflame gout.
And highly processed foods are cheap and readily available.
In fact, there was a study here a couple months ago showing the increased rate of gout in teens.

I put my first stuffed-full gallon freezer bag of small tomatoes in the deep freeze, and have another gallon ripening up on the counter. Plus there are many more green tomatoes in the garden, if they ever ripen up.

I saw a single zucchini that's ready to pick, too. They're growing slow in this cool weather. I might just go ahead and pull them all out of the ground pretty soon.

I am a nurse,

Well, I am an RN as well. Gout is not my specialty, but I live with it. I guess that makes me an expert on how gout affects me. When I was suffering from gout attacks, I consulted with my doctor, and went with her recommendations. Taking daily medicine for gout prevention has greatly improved my life.

In general, I agree. I like to say that food is your first medicine. If we all ate better, we would be healthier.

Taking daily Allopurinol for gout prevention has actual positive effects such as preventing uric acid build up in the body which could lead to damage to the kidneys and formation of stones.

it also takes a few years of diet for the crystals to dissolve ,

I decided to walk without pain. For a few months, I was almost bedridden with pain. My body was not clearing out my uric acid. I had to take Indomethacin medication for the gout flare up, and in a few days, I was walking again with little or no pain. After getting on the daily Allopurinol medication, I have been gout free for over 8 years.

Gout runs in my family. Almost all the men in my family suffer from it. True that some foods make things worse, but even on a good diet one can suffer from gout, especially if you are predisposed to the disease. At any rate, I am a living advocate of taking gout prevention medication for a healthier life and lifestyle.

Sadly DH doesn't like winter squash. I keep telling him that we should experiment with different ways to cook it, but he's not interested. 😕

I suggest experimenting with different ways of cooking that winter squash, if for no other reason, you may find other ways to enjoy it yourself. DH might also find he likes it cooked in a different way.

Recently, I mentioned that Dear Wife, a Filipina, has been all excited about the bitter melon (ampalaya) we managed to grow out in the garden this year. She loves bitter melon served with bitter melon, thank you very much. But it's far too bitter for me and my sensible tastes prepared that way. She made a nice stir fry one evening, using only a small portion of bitter melon in the dish, and I really liked it that way. It gave an extra "bam" to the stir fry without overpowering my taste buds.
