What did you do in the garden today?

I suffered from gout years ago. It got so bad I could not walk for almost 2 months. Almost passed out from pain just trying to get to the bathroom. My doctor said gout can be prevented by taking a daily dose of Allopurinol, She was right. I have not had a gout attack for about 8 years.

I asked about not eating certain foods, and my doctor said the problem is in the body not ridding itself of the uric acid. Some foods might increase the uric acid in your body, but the real program was to take the daily medication and eat normally.

So, ask your brother if your canned meats will trigger a gout attack or if he is on medication for gout. I have no problem eating any kinds of foods now that I am taking Allopurinol. Before that, yeah, canned meat might trigger my gout. Now that I take a daily medication, nothing I eat will trigger my gout.

:love It's great that you are concerned about your brother. I would encourage you to talk to him about his current condition. If he is not taking a daily medication for gout prevention, mention to him that gout can be prevented, and life can be so much better for him with medication. As much as I hated to admit that I needed to take daily medication, I would much rather enjoy my life and not be bedridden in pain. My gout was that bad.
My dad suffered from gout, but not after he started taking Allopurinol.

Watered the carrots and the turnips, here are the turnips:

The carrots are still hard to see in a photo.

That is good to hear. IIRC, my doctor said that some foods may make gout worse, but many foods can lead up to an increase level of uric acid in the body because the root problem is that your body is not flushing it out normally. Hence gout, even with "proper" diets. Her recommendation was to take Allopurinol and prevent the gout attacks. My life has dramatically improved on the medication.

:caf A few weeks ago I was asking the forum about different ways to organize and store seeds for the next year. I ended up buying a plastic 0.30 Cal Ammo box from Harbor Freight, which was twice the size of my current seed collection. The ammo box was on sale for $3.99.

As recommended by some others, I did check out the Hobby Lobby and found the Photo Storage plastic case and individual boxes. I think that would make an even better storage and organizing system, but I don't have nearly enough seeds to fill but one or two the plastic cases in that system. Still, at $14.99, I thought it was a great solution for people with lots of seeds.

:idunno Well, now that I have a storage and organizing system with the ammo box, I have been looking around to find some good clearance deals on leftover seeds at my favorite local stores. Guess what? Nobody has any seeds left in the store! It appears that all the seeds get sent back, or picked up, by the seed companies. Part of my idea was to buy seeds, for cheap, out of season, and save them for the next year. That's not going to happen!

❓What happens to all those seeds that were not sold this spring? Do they get tossed? Do they get repackaged for next year?

 So when do you gardeners buy your seeds? Only when you are ready to plant? Sometime at the end of the season when seed prices go down by 50% but before they are taken out of the stores? I really need to rethink my seed buying strategy to maximize my money. Obviously, I waited too long for this year.

I typically buy my seeds at the beginning of the garden season but I found seeds on sale at TS for 25¢. I am always looking for seeds that are on sale. The Dollar Tree has some seeds 4 for a $1.25.and some are 2 for the same price. I use empty pill bottles for my seeds. And of course I add a silica pack to it

Yeah, I checked the Dollar Tree, Menards, WalMart and Home Depot. None of them had any seeds for sale. Everything was removed.

I might have some silica packs laying around somewhere. If I can find them, I'll toss a pack or two into the ammo can where I am storing my seeds.

I just started saving some empty pill bottles for seeds. Are pill bottles better than just a paper envelope for seeds? I mean, if I am storing all the seeds in an ammo box with a tight lid, do I need to also keep seeds in pill bottles? A paper envelope would take up less room in the ammo box.
