What did you do in the garden today?

Just curious... What would be the problem with canned meats? Would this include our own home-canned meats or is the concern with the store-bought processed canned meats? I use my canned chicken and canned beef often.
I believe it has to do with the sodium levels but I could be wrong
 
Watching Aphids go to work on my chocolate mint in the green house. Oh well, at least the viet mint seems fine.

We had tomatoes in two sections of our garden: the main garden and our daughter's section. The tomatoes is my garden didn't amount to much at all. We got very few tomatoes, despite having 5 different varieties planted. They started to blight shortly after transplanting into garden.
My daughters tomatoes were abundant. Unfortunately, most of her tomatoes had sunscald. They were mis-labled at the green house. They were supposed to be a grape tomato but were too big to be grape tomatoes (about 2-3 times too large). They are more like a mini roma. Because they are so small already, it means a lot of trimming to remove the sunscald parts to use, but they made nice juice and salsa. I'm assuming they'll make nice spaghetti and pizza sauce too. However, they are time consuming, but since they are all we have I'm using them. My daughter was planning to sell them at a roadside stand but so few didn't have sunscald that she wasn't able to sell very many of them.
I'd be really curious to know what kind of tomato they really are because (other than the sunscald issue) we really liked them. Was the sunscald related to the blight issue that affected our tomatoes? I've heard it sunscald can be caused by lack of foilage, but I don't think that was the problem as they always looked very healthy.
 
Ace Hardware had leftover seeds for sale this Spring.

My local Ace Hardware did not have any seeds for sale. I asked a manager, and was told all the seeds went back to the seed company. They won't get new seeds until late winter/early spring next year. But like I said, local managers might have different return policies. I live in norhtern Minnesota, and I don't imagine many people will be buying seeds for the next 6 months. That's valuable floor space to waste on a product that is not going to move.

That's too bad. I don't think I have ever had mis-labeled plants from the greenhouse. My problem this year was that the greenhouses had a very, very limited variety of veggies this year. It was really disappointing. Oh well, next year I plan on staring seeds in the house and make sure I have my favorite plants ready to plant outside when the temps are right.

It might help you to put your geographic location on your member icon. That way, someone from your area might be able to better answer you. I don't imagine my advice from northern Minnesota, zone 3b, would have much value to someone growing food in a southern state, like a zone 9a, for example.

I'm also planning to start more seeds inside this year. I did for the last two years. My grape tomato plants for this year got set back from something (still not sure what...the farmer across the road sprayed about that time. Did the spray drift? or were they too tender when I was trying to harden them outside? So I bought new plants for my daughter's project). At planting time, the plants I had bought looked so much better than the plants I had started, but only planted 1 that I had started. I wish we had found room for the plants I had started also. The grape tomato plant that I started did well, but was only 1 plant. All lessons learned...trying again next year.
