What did you do in the garden today?

All the lettuce type clusters that I had seeded in cells the first time around have actually died out in the beds they were placed in. Had 33c today and that laid waste to them. I'm thinking about replacing them with more tomatoes since it seems to get quite a lot of sun. I still have some sun gold F1s and amish paste varieties.

That’s pretty toasty! I don’t know how warm you get there, but we often range between 43 and 46 C all summer with very low humidity. My Kratky buckets are under 50% shade and I don’t try gardening anything in that heat.

I made a zucchini cake but used shredded yellow squash instead. I thought it turned out good. The 6, 9 & 11 year old grandkids all ate it. Of course I didn’t tell them what it was other than cake.
We have another week of good temps, highs in the 70’s to 80’s and lows in the 50’s & 60’s but November 1st the bottom drops out and we will have highs in the 40’s and lows in the 20’s. I’ll need to make sure I get to the 2 gardens that still have some produce and pick everything that is pickable!

We are desert people but I only bake things that have either vegetables or fruit in it. & we're adults here, but I still hide our veggies. Even from myself, lol. I'm not really a veggie girl, I have to force myself. I've used cucumbers in place of zucchini but it has a very different flavor so you have to be careful, but it can work.

Here is a quick YouTube video that might help get you started in learning about the method. There are many, many YouTube videos on the subject that go into more detail. I have never tried hydroponics but might try it this winter.

Some summers can get like that but not all the time. Last summer was pretty mild I thought. I may have to deploy some shade like yourself, just not sure how I'll go about it as only two of the beds have a wire mesh screen that spans the two. I think a bloke on youtube every tried burying his kratky containers for extra insulation. I don't think I'd go that far.

I'm glad I got all my tomato and pepper plants removed from the garden yesterday, because it's been raining pretty much constantly all day today.

I did get a chance to go out between showers and removed all the strings I tied to the vertical ropes that supported my indeterminate tomato vines.

Not much left to do in the garden now. Need to sift out some compost from the chicken run and top dress the beds sometime this fall.

Ahhhhhh, yeah... Thanks for the reminder. I need to move my pepper plants into the sunroom before the temps drop this weekend.

My tomatoes are still producing. I'm not ready to give them up yet for the year.

Trying to sprout some golden kiwi seeds. Will check back after 3 weeks and see if I'm successful. I think the biggest error I made in the past was trying to transplant baby sprouts too soon. Hopefully I won't repeat that mistake!

Thank you for all the info on the kratky. I thought it was a type of plant not a hydro system. I think I might try looking into it further and also give the earth boxes a shot. My garden has been very successful this year. I'm hoping my fall garden does just as well. I hear my girls telling me that they want mom so that's all for now.

I might try a hydroponics system to grow some leafy greens in the basement this winter. A few years ago I tried growing some swiss chard in soil in the house, but it got infested with aphids. So, garden soil is not an option for me. Maybe the hydroponics will be more sterile.

As to Earth Boxes, there are many YouTube videos on DIY Earth Boxes you can make out of plastic storage totes. You can save lots of money that way. I might try that as well this winter inside the house using sterile potting soil as the medium and using liquid fertilizers for growing.

Thank you. That seems like a great idea for indoor gardening. I have a lot of the totes also. Maybe totes aren't just for storage anymore.

I've had my bird and squirrel feeders up now for nearly two weeks. STILL not even a nibble.
