What did you do in the garden today?

The weather was mild today, about 70°, so I decided to work more on the weedy slope in front of the house.

The growth on the fence to the right of the tree is on the neighbor's side. He gave me his permission to cut it back, but warned me that there was a nest of "ground bees'" in that area. I told him I was going to wait until colder weather!
Wow, my back aches just from looking at it!. Looks great though!

LOL, all this talk about honey makes me feel bad about not getting some from the local beekeeper. I've never really been big into honey. I don't know why. Never really eat breakfast. About the only time I'm big into honey is when it's honey chicken; then we're talking!

I have a feeling the tomatoes that are turning before anything else are the orange variety. I just have to remember which. Also the royal velvets are starting to bud up. The only thing I'm miserable about is that I didn't plant more. I could only imagine how the giant russians would of gone but I think the seeds were exposed to the elements too much and weren't viable.

I should just order a sunflower mix and go crazy with some blood and bone, maybe some more borage. Borage in different colors would be fun. The kratkies are doing well. Still no tomatoes. I don't know how they're going to go with the limited sunlight hours they get in the patio. The big cluster of lettuce in the blue kratky bit the bullet. Maybe just overcrowding. Oh well. Part of me wants to try Sunflower kratkies. I don't know how much a sunflower drinks though or how extensive their root system can be. I like how the royal velvets are small and short and aren't towering.
The root systems for the giant sunflowers are similar to corn. The others it just depends on the variety.

My grandfather was a beekeeper, I grew up with natural honey and can’t stand the taste of other honey. I am used to honey being so hard you need a pick to get some 😂 cheap honey is produced by feeding bees sugar, and they incorporate it into the honey, also, if honey is heated over a certain temperature to make it runny, most health benefits are lost , I get goosebumps just looking at those „honeybear“ packages 🤢 theres are also many kinds of different honeys like clover, chestnut, heath, cornflower and so on, and they all taste different and have different colors too
We often get mesquite honey here and it’s not overwhelmingly sweet, thick like butter and light golden in color, but not opaque like store honey. If I can’t get unfiltered local honey I don’t use it.

Hmm. It might be worth playing with then. I never thought of sunflowers being like corn LOL. But it's interesting. My tried growing corn in that same bed and they kinda got to a size and petered out. I hope I've amended the bed enough to sustain the royal velvets.

I understand that reasoning Penny! We usually go to our local feed store, but I can’t get straw from them unless I buy a bunch and pay for delivery. I just needed some for the nest boxes, so took advantage of the savings while I was there. I’ll support them if I can, but I have to look out for my pockets too.
I hear that. I always try to support local...if I can. Sometimes it's just too much money. I'll spend a little more local, but I can't get beat up too bad - I need to retire! LOL
My DH does not take baths. Ever. He's grossed out by the thought. I, on the other hand, enjoy a hot bubble bath on a cold night. We have a legacy jacuzzi soaking tub. I will open the window above the tub, light some candles, turn off the lights, and just relax with some light music. I don't stay in very long... Maybe 20 min. But it's my favorite way to unwind in the winter...
I love to soak in a tub. Our tub here is like a little playskool toy tub & I'm 5 10...doesn't work well, so we bought a hot tub. Best thing ever.

All this talk of honey, I went out to lunch yesterday & had a mozzarella & arugula salad drizzled with a hint of honey. It had 2 chunks of honey comb in the corners. OMG I was in heaven! There isn't much better than honey comb IMO.

Raining here this am. Just need to feed & water the birds. Not impressed with Chewy, I ordered a bag of high protein feed & it got lost. So they sent out a 2nd bag & it's been days & hasn't even shipped yet. My local feed store didn't have much except starter crumble & I'm not a fan of crumble so I thought I'd try Chewy. Guess I had that coming, buy local. LOL

Not in the same bed, but nearby is good. If you interplant then corn goes well with pole beans and pumpkins or squash. Check out a three sisters garden.

Sunflowers are something that I grow to give shade to corn in the afternoons here.

I just had to request a refund on an order from Amazon that never showed up, so give Chewy another chance if you can.

G’morning all. We’re getting rain! Not tons, but that’s ok. I have the door and windows open and our temps will be in the 70’s over the next week. We got our bulk trash out yesterday afternoon, so my yard is looking much better and I’m a happier person. That was really bugging me. We are hoping to get the mesquite out front trimmed a bit this afternoon after things dry out some. Then I’m putting it on a watering schedule since we’re still 3” below normal rainfall.
