Daikon update:

It's growing slowly. I watered the bucket well today with close to a gallon of water. I wanted the potting mix to get a good soaking.

Will the bucket drainage that I created with drain holes about an inch above the bottom of the bucket turn it into sort of a self watering bucket? There's room for water to pool in the bottom.

What did you put in the bottom? Gravel or something? How about your soil? You may need a wick.

I’m trying lava rocks in a couple of totes under soil. If the roots grow that deep there’s still moisture for them, but the soil isn’t saturated. We shall see how that goes.

I set my five gallon feeder and waterer on concrete ("cinder") blocks that I have sunk down 1-2". So far they've not been able to topple either one.

The waterer also is secured by a bungee cord.

This is what I do also. The waterer hasn’t actually fallen over, but the crew has dug enough around the block that it does tip from time to time. I put pavers around it so they can’t do it any more.

To be honest, that is a screen shot of the Spider plant I put on, as at that time I was posting, I was hunkered down sitting on a wood chip bale, inside the chicken coop. It was raining it's butt off with lightening. I duck into the nearest building whenever I see a scary lightening bolt. The electricity in the air literally makes my hair static-stand up, freaks me out.

Here are a few of mine, always having more babies, too.


House plants do so well here, even the Thanksgiving & Christmas cacti are still blooming. Plants I received as gifts when in the hospital 20 yrs ago are still thriving, & an African Violet my Mom had in the 70's is still blooming going strong, kinda amazes me that small plants can easily outlive us.

Beautiful! Our house has a north/south exposure and I don’t have a spot in the north I can move plants during summer. Otherwise they starve for light because we close all the blinds and hide in our cave all summer. So no houseplants for me. Except a pothos in the laundry room.

G’morning all. We’re in the 90’s for daytime highs so nothing outside but some watering for me right now. I’m having a bad psoriasis flare on my dominant hand also, so the teenager has helped with some weeds. Not much other than that going on here at the moment. Everything is greening up though and I noticed the chaste trees are thick enough with leaves to provide some deep shade underneath

Beautiful! Our house has a north/south exposure and I don’t have a spot in the north I can move plants during summer. Otherwise they starve for light because we close all the blinds and hide in our cave all summer. So no houseplants for me. Except a pothos in the laundry room.

I'm not crazy about how my house is designed overall, but have to admit I do appreciate a kitchen at the back of the house with that window full of southwest sunshine. I know it is more "houseplant jungle" than kitchen lately, but as soon as I can get that spare room emptied out, I plan to make it a nice plant room, seed starter room, too. I will keep a few spider plants spread around the house for air quality, but the majority of plants will go in that sunny room along with a few small elderly indoor birds.

I was making my old office into a plant room, but my daughter moved back in and it’s her bedroom now.

PFT another 2 giant black winter melon snapped off the vine. I supported 3 that were left hanging, but its easier said than done. First, I tied a mesh with 2 cords under the bottom of the vertical melon, so the weight is resting on the bottom of the melon. Then I thought, it might stop the growth of the melon, so I tied the other two up sideways. I need to sleep on this and search for heavy duty netting or make one with the cord.

I chopped up the smallest one and thought to myself, what am I going to do with 60 lbs of winter melon?

I found this easy winter melon drink recipe that I will try today.

I threw my chopped pieces of my winter melon in a blender with a little water and reduced the mush with equal parts of brown and white sugar on the stove.

I tried it with green tea and coffee. I like it better with coffee and fresh cream. Psychologically, it must have some nutritional value and it taste good.

I'll try using it with fresh squeezed lemon juice and water next. I am pretty sure it will taste like lemon aid.

YUCK. At least it's dry and not smelly. Just dusty, really dusty - navage to the rescue.
