What did you do in the garden today?

Peppers like to hold hands - you can fit em! LOL
@Swiss, Sue is right! Peppers like to be a bit crowded. In our raised bed (4’x16’), we plant 3 rows, and 13-14 lengthwise. This year we also planted them tight in the large bed: two rows, then a narrow path, 2 more rows… narrow path. I had already been crowding them before I found this same thing mentioned in a book.

We have 80+ pepper plants planted this year.

@Smokerbill - we usually don’t plant until close to June 1 so soil is good and warm and they don’t experience much chill, if at all. They will stay somewhat the same until it warms up A LOT. We planted ours a few days ago, which is a bit early for us. We have a few cooler nights coming, the lowest temp (as of now) is 47F at night. You should start to get peppers later August.

Thanks @Acre4Me . I'm just hoping that the pepper plants are not permanently stunted.

I just strung up some rope a few feet inside the garden fence (6 to 7 feet high) to try and prevent the deer from jumping in. It worked last year, so it should work again.

Something has been nipping leaves off of some of my parsley plants. And today I saw that something had completely eaten a couple very small marigold plants, and I thought nothing would eat marigolds.

It could be voles, I guess. Earwigs??? And I'm wondering if it could be the big squirrel I've seen in the yard lately. Might be having fried squirrel one of these days.

For some reason all the seedlings in one of the butternut squash hills look terrible. They're very small compared to the squash seedlings in the other three hills. I think I'll just yank them out and plant new seeds.

Here's a couple weeds that are spreading through all my beds. Anyone know what they are?

(had to reload the images, BYC is having issues I guess)

First one may be Virginia Spiderwort

Looks like what I have coming up in a few places. Grows really fast, has blue flowers and sometimes shows variegated leaves. Pretty but spreads invasively.

HAHAHA!!! I've heard that they like to be close, which is part of the reason I'm not concerned. The other reason is that I have lots of space set aside for companion plants (flowers and herbs), so I could put peppers in as well. I am planning on putting all 23 hot peppers in one 3'x12' bed, so they should be happy.
I'm a little concerned for my peppers. They've been in the garden for a few weeks now and have endured several upper 30's- low 40's nights. The tomatoes are looking good and growing, but the peppers are just standing still.

Next year my peppers won't go into the garden until after June 1st. I'll plant the seeds indoors early March.
That's what I am concerned about! I hope yours jump back into growing soon!

Woah! That's a lot of pepper plants!

Don't think it's spiderwort, I have clumps of that in the backyard, flowers are different. Spiderwort grows like daylilies. This has more of a low runner growth habit.
