Back to work outside today. I finally got my summer squash planted. Next up is clearing and prepping the rock garden and planting lima beans and pumpkins.

What type are those cute shrubs. I'm researching chicken safe shrubs right now.I added a couple bushes to my run last year & blocked off the roots with rocks. Works great. Hilarious to watch the girls jump up to pick the leaves.

Should've gotten a video of that!I usually wear old white t-shirts when working in the run. One day recently I forgot and wore a black t-shirt that had a green trees image. The hens jumped up to eat the "trees"!![]()
For a few years this guy from the county would show up looking for Johnsongrass back here on this dead end road. He'd say we have to address it or they'll come spray Roundup on it. There was the 8 acres across the gravel street, the owner did farm a few years but most years it sat there ignored & of course Johnsongrass would grow. The seeds blew everywhere so we'd end up with spots of Johnsongrass here. Most would grow along the property line of a lot ignored next door, full of trees, vines & along the line wild raspberry & of course Johnsongrass. I've cut the grass up to the trees ever since moving here, I guess it's about an extra acre worth of cutting. I do it because no one else will, it helps keep the encroaching weed growth down thus keeping mosquitoes down. I do not need my flock getting attacked by mosquitos. Anyway...the guy says he's gonna come spray any Johnsongrass with Roundup next week if the weeds are still there. I get out there & pull what I can't reach with the mower. I do not want that crap sprayed & the breeze carry spray over to my flock or plants. They did spray that 8 acres. Heard when they spray that much, someone gets a hefty bill for it in the mail. I do not know why that dude showed up here like that for about 5 years in a row, but we only see that county truck once in awhile now, just drives through. That 8 acres...well, a new neighbor bought the parcel next to it, which also extends to next door to me, the wooded ignored mess. He has not cleared out the mess next to me yet. It'll be sad for wildlife when he does. He has talked to the owner of that 8 acre parcel & he took action...yup, sprayed Roundup. That neighbor would be paying for my lost crop... There's consequences for being irresponsible like that.
The city sprayed Round-up along the curb and the drift nearly killed my Catawbas. Lost the crop that year entirely but they did bounce back and produce the following year. Now I have signs up indicating this area is an organic garden and spraying is not allowed. If they do it a 2nd time, they are toast...
Well mine is really a floor cleaner steamer, but I'm going to try it on the darn weeds growing in my concrete apron around the pole barn. How can weeds grow through concrete anyway?I'd love one of those steam weeders! But I'd need one with either a cord 1/8 mile long, or else battery operated.
I buried dud pigeon eggs one year. Literally the next morning I look out there & couldn't believe it...some critter dug up every single one & left huge craters! Whatever I planted was either laying there to the side or just gone. I do not bury eggs, I will use egg shells but no whole eggs ever again. It drew Raccoons & Opossums for weeks afterwards, too.I feel your pain. last year my dogs destroyed a lot of my tomatoes to get unhatched eggs I buried under them. this year I will bury only whole eggs as they don't stink and dogs don't smell them.
