What did you do in the garden today?

I dug up my squash and zinnias and gave to my processing plant, aka chickens. I’m very thankful for the amount we got from them b4 bugs took over - 15lbs or so 🤩. Turned soil and will wait to plant baby squash.
My butternut is going crazy. After throwing vine back in garden I just let it go out. That vine is more than 15 ft.
More cucumbers and beans and peppers. We are giving this to a family in need since we can’t give fresh produce to local food bank.
I also hoed my corn row. 😅 so thankful I don’t have to mow after this - more energy spent in garden 💕
Bless you.

Biting bugs are vicious this year. Yes, the typical ones, fire ants, horse flies, but we really have an overabundance of those tiny biting gnats! Little ba$!@rds, climb inside my shirt, get hung up in my hair, which is usually in a ponytail, so I'm itching & scratching, pulling my shirt out, messing hair up & wiping my face...yeah, DH asked me if I got into a wrestling match with the groundhogs, or some critters that dig dirt. I didn't realize it, but on my knees pulling weeds with no gloves, then wiping the sweat out of my eyes & scratching hairdo loose & tugging on my shirt trying to blow the darn gnats out from under my shirt, all with gardening hands...yeah, I was a sight alright. 😆

(Oh yeah...so basically in the garden...been watering, sweating, swearing at biting bugs & pulling weeds.)
Try spraying vanilla extract gnats hate it I spray on my face

Yay on the gopher & apricots (and light saber battle)!
Have you tried hydrocortisone or Benadryl cream for the itching? Benadryl gelcaps make folks sleepy, but some days, sleeping through it is better than itching.
I have. Doesn't help. I have yet to find anything that helps for no-see-em bites. Just time, patience and self control.

I had one black seed in a micro seedless watermelon. No idea what will grow from it, watermelon, eggplant, antelope, pine tree - but I'm going to plant it anyway.
Definitely will grow into an antelope! (LOL) Exactly who you want to become part of your alpaca herd.

Question for my corn growing friends.

I haven't grown corn in at least 10 years until now. I can feel tassels inside the newest growth. They haven't come out yet, they're a few leaves in. But I see no signs of ears... Am I going to get any corn? Or did I just waste hours and hours of my time watering compost...

ETA: I used Google. Looks like I'm actually doing a good job. Besides it being very hot for the last week. I've been keeping up with the corns demands for water and nutrients.

"foods to lower cholesterol," was oatmeal. Ok, something to start with.

I eat oatmeal for breakfast, more often than not. My cholesterol is high. I could do better with my diet, but I don't do too badly. I have to use a small dose of statins, unfortunately. My doctor says it's genetic for me. Fortunately, my good cholesterol is also high. I take Co-Q10 and a thioflavin supplement. I also use Ceylon cinnamon (good for blood sugar, too). I don't eat a lot of red meat, but I do love me some peanut butter. I'm not heavy and I'm very active (in the summer). Cholesterol is a tricky thing. You work out, regularly, Sally - so you've got that going for you. That's a huge factor in managing cholesterol.

Sueby, I just want you to know, here in the PNW I'm growing the second generation of Dahlias from the ones you sent me last year. Got so many new corms, I gave them an extra bed, and they're all growing great. I can't wait for them to start blooming in a couple months!
Thank you so much, these beauties bring huge joy to my life.
I am so glad to hear that, I so love them too. I got mine in a little late this year, but they'll get there.

Can Cucurbita moschata pollinate/cross Cucurbita pepo (& vice versa)? Google isn't giving me a lot of confidence.

So behind after being away for the weekend. We had lots of tornado watches & even a warning. 3.5 inches of rain. It was hot, nasty, humid at home but cold & rainy in NH where we were. We left early because of the tornado warnings, but had a great time. I heard we had hail at home but my garden is completely fine. Lost power last night so had to fire up the generator, too hot to sleep without the ac.

I have beans to pick today. Yay! Itty bitty tomatoes. Male flowers on the spaghetti squash, won't be long till female.
