What did you do in the garden today?

Maybe it’s in the water…
I felt better yesterday. I think it's the heat, being too busy, and feeling like everything is a mess.

Yesterday I pruned and tied up more tomato growth, cleaned the pools chlorine generator, picked up dog doodoo, mowed the grass, mowed the clover, accidently hit the fake grass with the mower again... Cleaned the kitchen, did all the dishes, did 4 loads of laundry, got three put away, there's still 3 more loads ...... 😩. Picked tomatillos and peppers. Went up to my MIL house around 5pm to take the small human to go swim and have dinner with everyone before they leave for Alaska on Tuesday. Finally got to see SIL new baby! She's two weeks old. And, I even caught a gopher in the orchard. There's still at least one more on a different tunnel system, but I'll catch that one before long.

Busy! But I got so much done! Not everything though.

Note to self, don't ever let the clover get that tall again. It was the worst thing to mow!

Does anyone know what ate my canteloupe?!

I went out this morning to take my dog out and he walked toward my canteloupe plant and this was on the ground eaten.

We have always had deer problems around here. ALOT of them. Could they be the culprit? There are no sharp points in the bites as if something with sharp teeth ate it.

G'morning all. I cleaned chicken pools and raked up some twigs that were laying around in the coop yard this morning. That yard is the bane of my existence at the moment. It's got enough of a grade that when it rains or the birds root around in there all the loose dirt on top migrates toward the flood vent. I've been working on improving the soil, but I don't ever have a reason to water so the soil is also a bit hydrophobic. There's a tree in that yard so I avoid much water so the roots will go deep. I'd rather that tree NOT fall on the house or the coop in a storm. I'll be working on moving that soil around a bit at a time and adding more straw or chicken litter. Switched over to liquid nutrients for the dragon fruit, it just mixes much easier/faster than the powders. We're expecting slightly cooler temps, like 110 or a little lower instead of 115+, and we may get some rain over the weekend. The teenager is going to help me take out the bulk trash Sunday morning and move some pavers. Going to get the corn in this weekend also. I noticed holes dug in the soil in the planters so the grackles have been looking for seeds so I dug out the bird netting too. I hate those birds enough that when one of their babies fell out of the nest I let the chickens deal with it. Never found a body. My night blooming jessamine looks like I over watered it and the Carolina jessamine is crispy in most places with just a few green leaves. We're all ready for cooler temps and it's only July. I think I change my clothes three times a day right now because they're sweat soaked.

This years tomato season will be a bust, unless we go very, very late, which CAN happen. We've been too cool at night and too wet.

Spent the morning getting diesel and chasing weather balloons. Got one and the other is deep into a bull field. Farmer said he would look for it when he feeds the beasts :)

In last night's storm, this Palo Verde beetle, which are harmless, was hangling onto our curtin in the garage. I brought it in and asked a few friends if their kids wanted it so they could get a closer look and then release it.
The kids we asked were heading out of town, so it went out to the garden.

There are losses and there are wins in the gardening hobby. Today I experienced one of those losses. A deer ate the last canteloupe to ripen on my canteloupe plant. 🙁

But my loss was a gain for my chickens. The chickens got to eat their first fresh canteloupe ever. Needless to say, they loved it!

I got rid of the canteloupe plant, since it was done producing and planted a young cucumber plant in it's place. Gave it some plant food to kickstart the growing process and give back some nutrients the canteloupe may have taken.

Last but not least I made some tiny "green houses" out of small clear plastic cups that my father in law gave to me because he had no use to them. I put some California Wonder Pepper sprouts in them!

I had a big pumpkin from last fall that I kept meaning to can... Except that whole "out of sight, out of mind" thing... So I set the pumpkin on our kitchen counter so I'd remember.... Only I STILL didn't get around to it. Two weeks later, the pumpkin has suddenly started to turn mushy and is leaking juice all over my freaking countertop. :barnie Completely my own fault...

Chickens are getting a pumpkin treat as a result
