What did you do in the garden today?

I grew potatoes in 7 gallon bags for the first time this year. Most of the earliest ones have died back so I got to harvest on Sunday. Now they are resting in a dark cupboard in our storeroom. Raising potatoes for sure does not save money, but it is fun!

G'morning all, I'm so far behind. Lots happening here and all I've done is maintain what's already growing. It's hot outside and I've been busy with some things in the house rather than doing much outside right now. One of the ducks passed, she didn't seem to adjust to the move very well and I'm not sure what the issue was. We waiting a bit to make sure nobody else was sick, then got a couple more girls from my son. We named them Connor, Ripley and Selene. The two chicks turned out to be goys, we're keeping the black Nn guy and his name is Phoenix. The temps got to be too much for the watermelons so they're dead and I'm pretty sure the cantaloupe isn't far behind. With temps in the 110 plus range during the day and lows in the 90's so I'm not surprised I guess. I haven't even planted corn or anything, we had a SHTF event in the house and that has taken priority. I'm planning to use the Greenstalk this fall and have several seed packets of various cooler season crops to start in the house though, I just need the rest of my life to calm down a little bit first. Take care everyone.

I'm a tiny bit better today. It'll be a slow recovery. I was advised that the clot will likely reabsorb before I could get in to have it fixed. Honestly I'm fine with that I guess. I've gotten past the worst of it now I think.

I haven't done much outside. Painful to move much and it was 103 today. I watered and reset my gopher traps. This one is smart. I'll catch it soon enough.

I am letting my pole beans go to seed so I have a good seed stock for next year. Only had 12 plants this year.

I'm preparing for starting my fall plantings. Beets will be the first to go in. Need to start seeds for pickling cucumbers and more summer squash.
I hope you feel way better soon... and catch your sneaky gopher. :)

I pulled the zucchini plants and put them in the burn barrel. Wow, did they have SVB larvae up in the stems. I'm surprised the plants were dead. The larvae can stay in the barrel and chomp on whatever they find, and then they're going to die in the next burn. Take that!

I got 4 zucchinis from 4 plants. Not what I was thinking/hoping I'd get. I have 2 plants coming up in a different bed. We'll see if the season is long enough to get anything off them.

I had an early morning medical appointment today then stopped at the grocery store on the way home. My sweet min pin Chloe had a seizure at 2 am that lasted awhile. Finally got back to sleep then did the clean up when I got up. When I went out to let the big chickens out to “free range” I noticed one of my butternut squash plants was in distress. Some of my San Marzano plants are looking a little peaked and I’m hoping it’s just a magnesium deficiency. I’m finally getting my much needed oral surgery done tomorrow morning so I really wanted to get the weed whacking done while I have the energy. I went over the “path” on the slope and got a lot done before the battery died. Then I tackled the front yard and got most of that cleaned up. I feel good that I got all the mowing and weed whacking done before I really won’t feel like doing it. I plan on putting some epsom salts and a little fertilizer down in the big garden before my appointment tomorrow. No rain in the forecast for over the next week. Wah! Btw: Chloe is fine, fortunately this is only her third seizure in the last 2 years. She was a street dog before being rescued. No real information on her past but she knows what plants are safe to eat. And yes, she’s an omnivore. Lol!
