What did you do in the garden today?

Someone was asking for this... I see it was already posted as text but here's the actual page in the book. @Sally PB

Nothing. Tomato plants have a few blossoms, I think the rest dropped due to the temperature. There are three watermelons not quite ready, and a couple cantaloupes.

I need to do some clean up and add compost to the beds for fall planting, but I am wiped out, exhausted from yard work.

Despite the heat I managed to mow the backyard over the weekend. It's been raining so much the grass and weeds were already thick and almost knee tall. It's raining again, too.

Bought about 50lbs of peaches (only spent about $28). Sooooo….. you can throw me any recipes for canning. Mostly interested in sliced peaches in syrup, but wondering if I can add any spice or flavoring? @WthrLady the speckle pear recipe with honey, cinnamon, vanilla was great. Wonder if I should just try that, but with peaches (or maybe cinnamon vanilla (no honey) so peach flavor shines).

I’ve already made 7 Qts of peach pie filling, and 12 pints of peach rum sauce (it’s peaches, sugar, brown sugar, and lemon peel). We’ve made the peach rum sauce before -a little goes a long way on ice cream, yogurt, pancakes.

Peach pie filling: I used white and yellow peaches for this batch. They look pretty.

That pie filling looks yummy recipe plz.
You DID score on that price! I'm paying $50.00 for a lug!
I agree cinnamon and sugar only in peaches. My whole life my mom and I just used a thin syrup 3 Parts to h20-1, to 1 part sugar or even 4- 1 to can peaches. Much more peach flavor than grocery store. My "old" Kerr canning book (circa 1970) has some recipes for peaches in Jelly section. Peach butter, peach/ cantaloupe conserves, peach orange marmalade( that one is yummy mom made that) and preserves. And lastly pickled peaches or pears.

Can you tell I grew up with yummy Colorado peaches! :frow:celebrate.

Having a crappy (literally) day. Half my goats have a coccidia infection with bad diarrhea. Treating them all... But since my chickens and ducks ALSO share the same space, I'm going to have to treat EVERYONE together.

Edited to add - btw, I'm pretty sure I know how they got it. I have these stone slabs in the water trough that are meant to save chicks who've fallen into the water so they don't drown. I noticed recently that many of the hens are using them to stand in the water and cool off, I think... But it also means they are pooping in the water sometimes. I try to clean it out daily but maybe it's not enough. I think I'll remove the slabs altogether since I don't have any chicks currently... And maybe clean the water twice daily instead of every morning.... At least while it's so hot outside.

Ever thought of a pinch of clove?
I added some more support to the determinate tomatoes, Romas and such. I have to quit planting them so close together!
Yeah, when I set out the tomato seedlings, they were soooo far apart! :lau They are falling all over now. What a mess.

Canning another 4 quarts at the moment.

Has anyone had problems with yellow shoulder on tomatoes? Different from sunscald. Someone on BYC said it's a lack of magnesium and potassium. I (mistakenly, I guess) thought that the Tomato Tone fertilizer would have everything they need.

I have had trouble with yellow shoulder for years now. Thought it was sunscald at first, but I find it on fruit in the middle of the plant. It is a BIG problem for me. It ruins 1/3-1/2 of each tomato! The four quarts I'm canning would have been seven, easily.

I've read yellow shoulder is because of high heat. I wonder if some kind of shading over your tomato plants would help, maybe a 50% shade cloth???

Transferred my cherry tomatoes and green pepper plants into a larger hydroponic tub.

The tub is too big so I ordered wicking to soak water up into the net pots as they don't sit down into the water. Only they sent me wicking that was thicker than I ordered, so I had to cut holes in the net pots to run the wicking through.

Anyway, got that one done. I need to make another tub, but don't have a water pump for it yet.
