I am so tired. I got 5 hours of sleep last night. Somehow I still got up and worked out at 6am, and got my kiddo to school on time, with a full stomach. Then I went over to my best friends house. She's in Belgium for two weeks. I am taking care of her chickens in her absence. Today I went over there, let the chickens out, then I went and planted cucumbers and summer squash in her garden as a surprise for when she comes home.

Her garden has been kind of sad for the last few years. She almost didn't plant a summer garden this year, but I gave her some plants and kept the flame alive.

Something I noticed when I was in her garden.... there was not a single worm, bug, anything microbial in the soil. Just a mess of old roots, dry dead soil... It's sandy, but you can tell it has organics in it.... it wasn't compacted. I've never seen anything like it actually. She doesn't mulch. That's all I can think of. I'm going to do a simple soil test tomorrow to see what the pH is, at the least. I did bring fertilizer with me, and coco coir. I expected to use some of her compost.... but it's mostly her native soil in there. Totally compacted and devoid of .... I'm going to call it "Love". there was a good smell to it, but the texture was so wrong, it felt dead.

Anyway, I did what I could there. Then I came home and planted my cucumbers, harvested a TON of tomatillos, and jalapenos. I pulled out a bunch of the tomatillo plants. The soil under them was full of life, full of worms, decomposing organics. It was comforting.

I finally made myself a 3x3 composting cube. I wasn't able to finish filling it before dinner time. Tomorrow I will finish it!

I've taken over 14k steps today. I think I'll sleep good tonight! Sunburn is kicking my butt though.

Morning all. Another nice one out there. I will do some work in the garden & clean the coop.

My lettuce, spinach & carrots are starting to come up.

I decided to try a fall (late summer) planting of a bush type cucumber in the greenstalk & it's doing well, already has a decent sized cucumber. I wasn't sure how well it'd do in the GS. Not that I need MORE cucumbers...lol.

Speaking of GS, I got my sister & her husband one as a retirement present, they are totally stoked, they've been wanting one.

My not so little GS cucumber:

Same weather here so far @Sueby. I’ve been plugging away in the garden these past couple of days. I just planted more lettuce and mustard. The kale I planted recently seems to be disappearing. I suspect the flock of sparrows maybe responsible for that. I watered the new fall garden plants and the strawberries. I’ve been picking tomatoes and black beans the past several days too. Grocery shopping today and cooking a butt roast for carnitas.

Heading for a feels like of almost 118' today and tomorrow. That's a hard, humid, NOPE for me. I'm almost done with outside chores and will retreat inside for the day, unless I'm checking livestock.
Ice all around and a sprinkler for the alpacas.
And of course it's the first full day of the state fair. Love to go, but NOPE.

Dang, sounds like our weather moved to your place. The fair would be a nope for me too!
