What did you do in the garden today?

Garlic arrived! It all looks good, and feels firm, no bad spots apparent. All are hard neck bc we like the scapes!

Music: a good all around garlic. Not sure why I ordered it though, bc I already grew some this year and had some to plant this fall (SMH at myself).

Chesnok Red: a late season, so will hopefully extend the scape season. Also noted to be “creamy” when baked, so that’s a plus!

Spanish Roja: sounded good, apparently popular.

You're going to have a big garlic patch!

Good morning gardeners. Yesterday was busy but I did manage to clean up the winter squash bed then added 2 more 4 foot rows of lettuce today. Yesterday I cooked up the green tomatoes into a salsa verde. I canned 5 half pint jars of it. After I planted the lettuce I thinned the carrots and Brussel sprouts. I have 10 Brussel sprout plants and I transplanted some to give them more space. Fingers crossed they survive. All of my ripe San Marzano tomatoes are in the freezer. The plan is to turn them into sauce then can. That and turning some of the apples into sauce is on my “to do” list for the coming week. The littles are getting better on the egg production. Four of the six made eggs yesterday. Best wishes for your DH’s hand to heal as fast as possible @igorsMistress. My sincere condolences to anyone affected by Helene.
Thanks Sarah, he had surgery Tuesday and is doing really well. Not even taking more pain medication than usual.

I watered this morning, it’s supposed to get to 116 today. It’s almost October but we are under an excessive heat warning through Tuesday, which could be extended. Either way, we’re breaking records for the heat. I got busy and didn’t water much so the lantana died and a couple other things are at risk right now.

I’ve got a question for you gardeners. I grew pinto beans for the first time this year, and they grew super well, we’ve been harvesting them for about a week now, as they dry up on the vine. My question is: will they dry if you pick them when they’re mature but not quite dry? There are plenty of big ones on the plants, but we need to pull them up really soon, as we have to get the cover crop planted before the irrigation shuts off for the winter in a couple weeks. I’ve read conflicting information online, and I’m not sure what to believe.

Let me know if I need to word my question differently, I wasn’t quite sure how to ask it. :)

When I saved beans for seed, I let them stay on the vine as long as possible. Then I picked the pods and left them somewhere warm-ish, but dry (not humid, like the basement) to finish drying and curing. Shelling them was a task for after other garden work was done for the season. They can sit in the pods and wait for you.
