I put two 1/4-inch wicking ropes in the basket to keep the coco moist. In comparison from past experiments, I had better results without the wicking ropes. This year, I am curious to see how the clay pebbles perform. It's an experiment on humidity and breathability.I use sphegnum moss in the pots. It maintains a good moisture level around the roots without allowing rot.
I just had a heated discussion with my A1 copilot, and we concluded that all the Kratky bucket needs is a small hole on the top side for the plant to breath (Gas exchange) and I should cover the top with plastic, so the rain doesn't get in and to keep the medium from completely drying out.
