What did you do in the garden today?

I would if I could! The little floofs are adorable, I love the idea of chicken manure compost instead of buying bagged stuff (I kid you not in a prior year’s bagged dirt I found a glass shard) and I regret my lack of Australorps every time I hear about another egg shortage/price increase. But my HOA doesn’t allow livestock (and unless I’m misremembering there’s a prohibition against birds so no ‘pet’ chickens either).

where I lived before a limited number of poultry only was allowed. I sold my house and moved to the country. never regretted.

We live in the suburbs..we HAD an HOA who did basically nothing except take money from everyone. It was dissolved and I got chickens that spring! Go to a meeting.. ask for it to be dissolved if you feel it doesn't do anything. We do have to follow our city ordinances that says no more than 4 hens but I know quite a few people who have way more than that!

I’m in a condo sort of situation so I can’t really blame the HOA for the prohibition given the risks for mice, potential rooster noise, etc. 🙁 Finding a nice plot of land that allows for chickens is on the to-do list, but at least a few years out. It doesn’t stop me from finding excuses to stop by Tractor Supply and look at the babies though!

Watering and making three wire cages for composting. I have this recycled trash can from the city with holes cut in the sides and it’s ok, but heavy and bulky. I think I’m going to convert that over to a holding tank for brown stuff. It’ll stay dry because there’s a lid.

I always gather and lay leaves on my garden in the fall. Then I lay chicken wire or some type of fence I've most of it the best I can . It is so helpful for the microorganisms in your soil.
I totally should have done that in the fall but I simply didn't have the time and then the weather got nasty. I really hope to do this annually to keep from tilling as much. My soil is very fertile because I put compost on it from our farm.... It used to be just dense red clay, but now it's rich and loamy. Things grow really well, including weeds unfortunately. 😂 My entire gardening education/effort/experimentation has been to figure out how to do less weeding, less watering, and pest control. Everything else takes care of itself.

I just got my original standard size earth box from amazon today. It's about 2 times smaller than my Lowes med size tote. It looks like it could fit around 1.50 to 2 five-gallon buckets of pro-mix. I thought it would be bigger; I can't believe this little thing can kick out them tomatoes.

There are actually 5 seasons. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Mud.
