What did you do in the garden today?

I screwed up by transplanting my tomato seedlings too soon. And I tried to cheap out by using poor quality potting soil. The seedlings haven't grown at all since I moved them to the larger pots a week ago, and they look a sickly yellow-green. Live and learn what you can't get away with.

I'm starting over and planted 24 seed cells with tomato seeds this morning, 3 varieties, three seeds in each cell. I'll thin each to the best plant. They'll be small when I put them in the garden in June, but I think they'll do OK.

I remember planting tomatoes I'd bought in a fit of optimism in a warm spell in March. Then a cold snap and they shriveled up and died. Now I always plant Easter weekend or after. I put in mine this weekend.

I have persimmon tree that was planted over 30 years ago. It fruited plenty of tiny fruits, too small to eat. I was busy so never pay any attention, now I will.

This tree is less than 2m in height. I need to up roost this tree and replant it some where else.

I am worried that it will not survive the autumn cold soil if I up roost it in this cold weather.

Any advice you can give on when it is best to up roost an old tree? Thanks in advance

That's a tough one - I tried digging up some baby persimmons that were growing wild in my orchard, hoping to transplant them and they all died. It was hard to get the deep tap root.

I didn't have much free time today, but did put in 3 more tomato plants in the raised bed, so I have 8 total. I also dug up a bunch of elderberry seedlings out of the mini-orchard and transplanted them.

I literally laid down in the straw pathway while I pulled the tiny weeds out from around my baby lettuce and kales . It was actually really nice.

The grand kids did a lot in the few hours they were here. I had to cut the day short because my Chloe had another seizure. It wasn’t as bad as the others and it’s been nearly 14 months since her last one. We have an appointment at the vet tomorrow. She’s fine now. I had wanted to plant peas today however I tested the soil in both the new beds and the one where I will be planting tested alkaline. I’ll amend the soil then retest. We/ the girls planted kale, lettuce and bok choi starts in the smaller bed. They also planted flowers in the containers in the front yard and insisted on cleaning up the herb gardens. Not sure how much I can get accomplished tomorrow but I really need to work on the new strawberry bags and get them planted.

Moving a tree that old will likely kill it unless you hire a tree spade to move it. The good news is any roots left in the ground will grow a new tree. If the tree was not grafted, they will be clones.

I will leave it as it is then, shame that it just does not bear fruits that big enough to eat....

I think that tree is grafted.

It is in the middle of my chicken run, and my chickens have only being there less than 8 years.

I hope your Chloe gets good report from the VET tomorrow. I am glad she is ok now.
