What did you do in the garden today?

Got my sweet potatoes, the last of the peppers and my cucumber seeds planted. Now I can sift compost for the flower beds. Food always comes first.

I did a bit of weeding, but less than I planned. It was so windy that I was getting a dust bath.

One of the three rhubarb crowns I bought is alive! It has a little bud that has split and is showing a little bit of yellow-green. Now I have more hope for the others.

Grafted onto seedling persimmons. No peaches set. Cold got the blossoms. Some plums set. Lots of sour cherries set. 2 of the plum grafts are breaking bud. Planted 2 rhubarb starts. Bought yellow hollyhock start and native columbine. Planted. Apple blossoms are at petal fall.

Laundry is done, shopping is done. I planted yellow beet seeds this afternoon then watered all the beds that were planted. I also cut the potatoes to get them ready for planting. I should be able to plant them tomorrow. The temperatures were near 80F today but will be cooler tomorrow. Planning on working on the garden beds that will be planted next. I also picked more asparagus this morning.

Did my first attempt at scarification today with some nail clippers. Squash, melon and cucumber seeds. Couldn’t figure out which end of the seed I was supposed to clip so I trimmed a bit off one side of each before planting. They’re in paper pots since the nights keep dipping lower than I like, hopefully if they don’t make it indoors I’ll still have a chance to direct sow outside.

I can also confirm my sage made it through the winter! There are new leaves at the ends of a few branches.

Aphids... Ugh. I hate them so much. They easily get through my insect netting and multiply to problem levels in the blink of an eye. I just sprayed for aphids a couple of days ago... And already.

Picked a bunch of stuff tonight to make a garden salad. This included a couple of volunteer carrots - one purple dragon and a couple of kuroda orange carrots. My experience with purple carrots holds... It's a hard, woody, and bitter experience. The kuroda were soft and sweet. I don't think I'm going to grow purple carrots again.

…plant some dill? Mine attracted hoverflies last year that made the aphids practically evaporate.
