What did you do in the garden today?

Even though it rained a little last night I gave the new planted seeds a shot of water from the hose, then I watered the pepper plants.

I saw tomatoes sprouting from my chicken run compost pile, so I decided to plant butternut squash on top of the pile to see what happens.

Picked a couple pounds of leaf lettuce this morning while it was still cool and crispy.

I managed to get another bed prepped for planting. I was originally going to plant peppers and okra there but I decided to plant black turtle beans there. I only have the small round bed left in there so I may do some eggplant and okra. Then next week I’ll be working on the hill garden. After that will be prepping the corn patch and planting. This morning I watered the gardens that are planted and picked some more asparagus. We only got a few spits of rain. Wah! On the subject of cholesterol: I have struggled with this for years. What I have learned in the past 25 years: my cholesterol problem is primarily caused by genetics - it runs in the family. Eggs are not the bad “guys” in dietary cholesterol. Those culprits are saturated fats, transfats (the worst because it destroys the healthy cholesterol) and over eating. Highly processed foods are also so bad for your health along with artificial products. JMHO and years of doctor appointments, dietitians, etc.

Our bodies make cholesterol. If you do not eat it you produce it. Statins did so much damage to me I refuse to take them. Lookup Eisenhower paradox. Fat is not bad. You have a gallbladder to help digest fat. All animals and birds have a gallbladder. Fat is part of a healthy diet.

Today I transplanted some brussel sprouts and cabbage. This is very late for these cold crops but I want to give them a chance. I started more than usual indoors this winter, I decided to try starting some things in greenstalk planters in the house (taken apart). It was an idea and it didn't really work for me but I ended up with lots of very small brussels, cauliflower, cabbage. I overplanted each area. I don't know what I was thinking just trying something new. Anyway at least a month after they needed to be planted out I still had lots of these still tiny starts. Now they're in the ground they will maybe do better. Or maybe not, I will learn from it.

Yesterday I did some fertilizing of already transplanted things.

A few days ago I started some winter squashes and cucumber indoors in case squirrels and other wildlife get the seeds started outdoors. These seedlings are the back up plan, I know it's best to start these crops in the group not transplant but some years the seeds get eaten before they sprout! These indoor seeds have already sprouted well so I should be able to put some of them in the ground this weekend.

Our baby chicks are getting bigger so there is a lot of shuttling them around before work and before bedtime too. Spring is sure a busy time.

Something has been eating the leaves of a newly planted small tree. Rabbit, groundhog or deer. Put a cage over it. Same tree a coon tried to dig up. Always something. I will have to cage the green beans. Rabbits and deer love bean plants.
Well then, I guess I'm going to have to make the plot I planted beans in rabbit proof with chicken wire around the bottom. It's not a raised bed, but all at ground level. And there's a big cottontail rabbit running around that visits my raised bed garden.

I Was going to trim things up all neat, get my mind off recent loss of our hen. But tractor's out of gas. So took machete and started on the outside. Played with my little flock and made sure they were happy. No complaints here Jesse. K. Help me mow down this grass then!

disclaimer: never EVER let your chicken eat grass especially when its long. Can cause crop blockage then you'll need the quick lavage vid from Jesse. No grass!
