What did you do in the garden today?

Garden pics post #2

Container herb garden... Everything is bolting.

Greenstalk alpine strawberries need fed, I think. I also seeded more strawberries in the upper levels. They never germinated. Lettuce here is bolting too.

Indeterminate tomatoes in the ground. Determinate are in the raised bed behind them.

Cantaloupe is still barely growing...

Bugs eating my green tomatoes! Grrrrrr. I need to spray them.

Black rot has taken ALL my Catawba grapes this year. 😭

Half my potatoes died and are now trying to start again...

Lettuce starting to bolt. Spinach said I'm done.

2 yr old and counting purple broccoli plants. It gave me some stalks earlier in the spring. Basically I just harvest leaves and seeds from it now.
20250602_184249.jpg

Sprayed some kaolin clay on the peaches that aren't bagged but ran out of spray....
20250602_184354.jpg

Strawberries going runner crazy. 🙄
20250602_184406.jpg

Dahlias and more calendula. Hollyhocks behind them but they won't flower until next year?
20250602_184414.jpg

Glencoe raspberries are just starting to ripen.
20250602_184432.jpg

Lemon tree doing well
20250602_184556.jpg

First canna lily of the year.
20250602_184603.jpg

Lilac busy decided to bloom a 2nd time.
20250602_184612.jpg

Divided and transplanted a bunch of aloe. It's doing well but now I don't know what to do with it. 😂 I have a bunch more inside my house too...

With all the wonderful things you have growing, I am so in love with those pastel nasturtiums you are growing. Never seen them that color. Do you remember where you got the seed?

Auxiliary garden underway. 80+ year old neighbors won’t do much from here on out with respect to their garden plot, so my husband nicely asked if we could plant corn there. They said yes! So on Sunday we planted 25’ rows of 3 sweet corn varieties. 2 rows Silver Queen, 3 rows Bodacious, 3 rows Bi-Licious. We spaced the rows 2.5’ apart, and seeds about 10” apart in the rows.

Since the neighbor also gave me his purple hull pea seeds (a type of Cowpea) I then used the other 25’ of his garden to plant 4 varieties of cowpeas, including the purple hull peas. He enjoys watching his garden grow, but his hips and knees won’t allow him to garden much now. So this way he can enjoy watching things grow.
The corn will be interesting to see/taste what they produce as corn cross-pollinates easily. You may have created a possible new Silver Boda-Licious variety😄. That was nice of you to give the 80+ neighbor a garden to enjoy. I'm 80+ & chickens & a garden does offer joy to us oldsters!

What a beautiful way to grow a garden and how much he will enjoy watching it grow again.

All the garden starts are in the ground. The only thing left to plant is onions around stuff, and zucchini and beans from seed. Since they need a relatively short season, they can wait while I catch up on the weeding and mulching.

I planted a row of collards and chard. Almost nothing came up. This happened last spring. Then I planted again in August, and the chard went crazy. The collards were eaten by cabbage moth larvae, I think.
Sounds like a plan. We have a small suburban backyard w/ two 4'x8' raised garden beds for tomatoes/cukes/peppers but smaller plants like peppers, herbs, green onions, lettuces, chards, radishes, are planted in containers up off the ground which seems to help keep them healthier.
