What did you do in the garden today?

I wonder if high rate of skin cancer is more due to chemicals people put on their skin. skin must breathe. ok, I am old enough to know that sunshine is not as it used to be but I prefer to avoid it from 1 pm to about 5 pm.
Our sun here is....worse than other places as far as I know, I have only been to a few countries. I get sunburn and blister on my skin when I am out at the beach without hat or sun cream. It was not like that when I was young, but about my mid 30' I started to have this issue. That is just from walking for an hour along the beach.

"Due to its geographical location and close proximity to the equator, Australia experiences some of the highest levels of solar UVR in the world. The earth's elliptical orbit brings the earth closer to the sun in January, during summer in the southern hemisphere, resulting in higher levels of UVR."

I am loving the sunshine and blue sky we are having and I can feel burn on my face. Hat and long sleeve for me, a bit of sun cream on my face as I will be in the garden mostly.

Chemicals are also the risk. One day they say it is safe and good, then next day they say..oh no good. Sun cream is also has its issue...the high number is good, and then some it is not really enough protection.etc...

At home, any plastic that is not made in Australia will breakdown really fast in the sun. My big rubbish bins are almost 40 years old and still no sign of fading in their colours, they are standing in the sun everyday. Pegs for my clothes that are imported, they breakdown fast so I only buy pegs that are made in Australia. The manufacturers know our condition.

I grew up in upper Midwest in the US. We were ALWAYS outside as kids. Never had any sunscreen. I can also remember people constantly tanning to get dark tans... Anyone remember those "show us your tan" contests in the 80s?

Anyway, I had a very good childhood friend who lived in Yeppoon on the Great Barrier Reef. I can remember back then her saying that skin cancer was really bad and Australians were very health conscious about it. That was back in the 80s...When I went to visit her, I can remember many people (all Australians) telling me that tourists are easy to spot because they are the only ones tanning or not wearing sunscreen. (And also the only people swimming during "winter" - their winter, our summer - but still it was easily 70 degrees outside. 😂)

Yeppon is in the North Queensland, that is my state. Yes, your friend is absolutely spot on there! Queensland's winter is not so cold, but to us it is very cold and of course you can tell who the the tourists are straight away.😄

In the 80s we used to constantly see the advertisement for sun protection....
Slip, slop, slap song.....🎶
Slip on a shirt
Slop on suncream
Slap on a hat

I was not born with freckles on my face, but I got it around my mid 20, I think this is from being out in the sun just a bit too much.

Get vitamin D or cancer? I really don't know how to measure the moderation in this, I do take vitamin D supplement.

We have some dramatic beefsteaks! They’re like, I’m going die!!
Same here. Stick the potted plants in the ground:

"OMG, you touched my roots!" Plant bends over, limp. "I shall die from this, I just know it!"

Two days later, it's standing up and reaching for the sky. "My roots have so much more room now! I will grow tall and strong and make lots of children!"

I hope so. We had them in pots last year and moved near a fence to help support and they died. My dd said we need to just put the seed in ground next year 😂. The romas didn’t care where I put them. Just the beefsteaks that freak when I move them! They are in their forever hole now 😂

From the age of 5 til about 14 I swam on a swim team all summer. Traveling some even.
The only person who wore any sunscreen was the coach who put zinc on his nose, shoulders and ears.
When dd was about 3-4 we took her to the beach. She got sun poisoning and was wearing sunscreen and a hat.
I tried to keep sunscreen on them but eventually gave up when they got in teens.
I don’t use sunscreen and try to limit my time in mornings.

I mentioned earlier that my cucumbers are coming up now. There were just a few this morning, and this afternoon the whole row is popping. And my rattlesnake beans are coming up too.

So to keep critters from messing with them I covered all the bean rows and the cukes with strips of floating row cover.

I made good progress on my deer fence today, adding conduit extensions to most of the T-posts, making them 8.5 feet tall. I beefed up the top of the bean trellis, replacing the wood slats with a 10' piece of EMT. I pounded in two more T-posts to help support the chicken wire.

The round fence posts will lay on the ground with the chicken wire tacked on somehow. I'm thinking the top edge of the chicken wire will be supported with rope, 4 feet high, wrapped around all the fence posts. Another wrap of rope at 8 feet will support the lightweight deer mesh, that will hang down 7 feet and overlap the chicken wire.

That's the plan, today anyway.

I'm picking all the garlic scapes tomorrow and cooking them with a fat cottontail rabbit that was eating out of my garden, some of my canned tomato sauce and paste, an onion, maybe some carrots and celery, chopped fresh tomatoes and various herbs and spices that I haven't decided on yet. Might add some red wine too.

I saw a recipe for Greek rabbit Stifado that I'm using as a guide for the technique, but using ingredients I have on hand. It'll be braised until the rabbit is falling apart tender and served over rice.

Got a new fridge delivered and installed today. The old one works but has problems. It'll be a garage backup.

Interestingly enough this shipper,FedEx, has a distribution center in the town of Seaford about 20 minutes from here, which is where the package is actually sent out for delivery. Knowing this makes it even more mind boggling that this particular package went to three wide ranging areas in this region before landing in Seaford.
Some years back, it reported on our tv here that a parcel was addressed to Australia, but it ended up in AusTRIA. The post office in Austria send it back to Australia, and then again it got send back to AusTRia and so it went back and for 3 or 4 times before it delivered to the intended recipient in Australia. ....I get it that they were wrong the first time, but again after that is just.........

Austria is not Australia is not Austria
