What did you do in the garden today?

Going to rain in a bit... I need to go feed tomatoes before it does...

Picked a peach this morning. Still feels like it's early but everything is mostly red/yellow on the tree so I'm guessing they will be ready within a week. The other peach tree is a different variety and still has a long way to go.

Well, the verdict is in. DH and I are likely going to try to move in the next year or so... 😭 My ex-neighbor seems determined to build a subdivision behind my property. This will destroy our sense of seclusion. DH notified the city this morning though because dude has ZERO permits. He also has to go through zoning and planning... None of which he did. So we might have slowed down the inevitable for a short time but it will all happen eventually. If he was just putting ONE house back there, I wouldn't care. It's only 3 acres tops. But his greed is king and he wants to put in small lots to pinch out every cent he can get away... So we are going to move further out in the country somewhere. That means starting all over on my trees, asparagus, berries, grapes etc.... I guess the silver lining is that I can take my lessons learned and plan out a garden space a little more efficiently next time.

If I had to start over, I would plant some dwarf trees right away, then I'd have some fruit to enjoy really quickly.
My dwarf trees had apples on them year 2 and loaded by year 3.

@Rick589 🤣🤔 I mean, I do want to redo the front landscaping....I wanted to plant food out there but I'm worried it'll invite critters to come find the rest of the garden... no, but what really made me laugh is your choice of words. 😂🤣

@TJAnonymous I'm sorry that you will likely be moving. I dread the idea of moving away from my 11 years of hard work in my little sanctuary. But, we can't stand having neighbors right on top of us... It drives us crazy. But, I like to remind myself that wherever we move next.... I'm going to have a fresh start and grow the most epic gardens! I sometimes actually get excited about the prospect. Sometimes.

When we move, I am going to take all of my blackberries, raspberries, bulbs, and cuttings from my grapes.

If they want my berries, I will give them cuttings. My mother plants go with me. No exceptions.

I'll definitely be taking my mom's iris bulbs and my canna lily bulbs. Also my garden she-shed. It was also my mom's so it's coming with... I just planted my paw paws and Sugar Bee apple trees this year. If we really do go, I'll dig those up too... I've always been hit and miss with successful cuttings. I tried to establish some grape cuttings from my Concords. Didn't work... But the cutting I planted from my Granny Smith looks promising. After losing half the wood and all the leaves, I see a tiny green bud on the main stem... So maybe. But my hazelnuts and honey mesquite will need to be started over again.

It might be possible that your big trees could be transplanted. But I don't know how expensive it would be to hire the arborist or whoever does it, or if it would be worth the cost to you.

Plumbing work today. Someone had a heavy hand closing the garden hose valve and destroyed the seat washer. The threads need to be re-cut on the galvanized pipe coming out of the ground too. I have new die for the 3/4" pipe ready to go.

And there's a second garden valve I need to replace while the water is turned off, so maybe a couple hour job to get it all done.

I watered the garden, except for the tomatoes and peppers in the new garden bed. They're looking fine and I don't want to make the mistake of overwatering them and causing root rot. I did water the beans and black currants that are in that bed, though.

I saw a vole hole in one of the garden beds, but none of the nearby plants are suffering so I'll leave the critter alone so it can continue aerating the soil and dropping fertilizer pellets. LOL

My two Marconi peppers in my DYI earth Box tote got decimated by blood sucking aphids. They were thriving and I had an insect net over them, so I let my guard down. When I saw the infestation, it was too late. I immediately sprayed them with malathion insect spray, but one of the plants couldn't recover.

What puzzled me was the determinate Roma type tomatoes growing right next to the Marconi peppers did not have any insect problem. Now that I think about it, the aphids in my yard doesn't bother my tomato plants, just the annoying guy who cuts a ring around the stem of young shoots. It's a good thing that it doesn't have the instinct and intelligence to crawl up under the insect net like aphids and ants.

I got some stuff done in the garden yesterday. Picked 8# more of blackberries. I was wrong, there's at least another 10# additional ready to pick. 🤣

I got a garden tour of my neighbor's garden yesterday. I love her little garden and orchard. She did have 3 artichoke plants within a 2ft wide bed all within a 2ft section. I advised her to move two of them elsewhere since they get enormous. Artichoke will grow wild here so there's no harm in moving it to the native soil. I gave her the rest of my pepper plants before I took the tour. She needed to replace a few that got root rot, like I did. I'm happy they went to a good home.
Where do you live? I would be nice to finally find someone who lives around where I do

The best tasting roasted eggplant variety to me is the round glossy Black Beauty. However, it must be picked when they are young and tender. I prune the branches back whenever I harvest to keep the plant compact and to prevent from getting overwhelmed by the sheer number of fruits it produces.

My grafted Black Beauty eggplant on my devil plant has finally set some fruit. I wonder if they will taste the same. I am going outside to take a picture.

Trimmed the bottom branches off of all of my tomato plants, found tomatoes finally growing! It's supposed to start raining any minute and continue on in spurts till tomorrow evening o.o

My sunflowers are getting close to blooming 💛 my son was dancing around them, he loves how tall they are. He's just about to turn 5 and they are 6 inches taller than him so far. He's very proud of them and of his cherry tomatoes. He has cultivated a little patch of wood sorrel because he loves snacking on the seed pods.
