What did you do in the garden today?

First garlic and potatoes this year. The garlic plant had fallen over so I figured it was time to dig it out. And a couple of the potato vines were dying, so again, it was time. Voles had chewed up a few of the potatoes pretty bad but left enough for a mess.

Lesson learned. Don't try planting potatoes in October. Voles find them in the fall and eat on the seed potatoes, then wait for the new ones to grow the next spring and eat those too. I need to find a new spot to plant potatoes next year that the voles don't know about.

I put some castor oil granulars down when I planted the potatoes and onions this spring.

So far the moles are staying out of the garden. They are in the poultry yard and something comes at night digs one out and leaves the mole dead. 2x a couple days apart.

Interesting. Never heard of that stuff before. When I planted potatoes in the spring of 2024 I didn't have a problem like this with the voles.

Picked a bunch more peaches... Hardly made a dent in what's left on the tree... Even with the squirrels eating 20 or so a day.

Our tax is based on what the county THINKS, BELIEVES, you can SELL your house for at the time of the assessment. Fairy dreams and wishes when it's your retirement house. I swear, I feel like I'm paying rent to the state/county for something I've paid in full for already.

I feel like moving to Florida where desantis is doing away with property taxes. My taxes and insurance tripled this year. I no longer pay taxes on what I paid for it but on what they think I could sell it for. This is my retirement home also, and social security will never keep up with this system.

Geez, somehow this doesn’t compute with me. For no particular reason I’ve just never associated Nebraska with this type of taxation. I don’t know maybe its the Breadbasket, Norman Rockwell image I’ve always had of Nebraska. Well color me obtuse.

Ya, 90% of it is. But that's not the % that controls the $$ or makes the rules. I think we have the highest or second highest property taxes in the country. But hey, we have a balanced budget every year.

I wonder if you are watching a video from LINCOLN COUNTY which is way out west by Dickens. That's not anywhere near Lincoln Ne.

I had a long talk with the beans and onions this morning. I hope they can all just get along. LOL

Seriously, the reason I planted the beans there was because there were ropes already in place for them to climb, and I don't really care if they produce anything or not. If I get a few for seeds for next year I'll be happy. Maybe I'll get an onion-tolerant strain of Blue Lake beans.

I guess I could start pulling up the onions and shallots next to the beans if there's a problem later on.

I've read that beans will have stunt growth if planted near onions and garlic. you will tell us if that's true.

I chopped down the chive clump in the back a month ago and it's got something edible growing out of it now. I trimmed of the other chive clumps yesterday.

Dill is getting ready to bloom, but the timing's off, because my pickling cucumbers are just forming their first true leaves. Do I freeze the dill or dry it to make pickles with later? Not sure what to do.

collect seeds when they are ready and use them in pickles. also you can start some dill from seed for fresh leaves. I would not freeze it and dry dill would be ok to use but almost has no scent.
