What did you do in the garden today?

Today in the NE Scotland, we've been having glorious weather. I did a bit of weeding and checked on my courgettes (zucchini's), mini corn and deadheaded some calendula flowers for drying.

Saw on the news it was scorching hot over there.

I thought about growing courgettes but it would be a waste not to mention the chooks would likely decimate them, my silkie figured out she could stick her head through the mesh fencing and taught the rest also, they have been enjoying my lettuce!

Had a chance to pot my Ravenea Rivularis, the darn chickens think it’s great fun now, they get into the pots and dig around.

Also planted some Musa Basjoo I picked up on Saturday, they grow fast and will be quite big by the time I need to bring them inside. Hopefully my mum won’t kill these ones off….

It’s steamy and hot just the sort of weather banana and palms love! For the next 6-8 weeks I can pretend to live in the tropics.

So, went to check the garden to see how crippling the heat has been on everything today. As I walked passed the coop all of the chickens were out lounging around in their yard INCLUDING our new mother AND her new chicks. Mind you the coop is elevated about two feet above the ground. Everyone just hanging out like nothing new has happened.

Some times they have trouble going up the ramp

Hello Ponypoor, your silky and garden are gorgeous. My courgettes are secured from number of predators. Mainly a lulupping labrador. I hope you enjoy the fruits of your labour in this glorious tropical for Scotland heat.

Too hot and humid today. I dragged the cattle panel to the garden. I cut my finger the other day and I take a blood thinner. I bled really bad and DW wanted me to go to the ER. I said it looks worse than it is. Short times outside is all I can take today. Tomorrow should be better.
I carry bandaids with me.

Fellow Massachusetter here!!! And GIRL SAME! We've got wild raspberries and peas ripening here too! The heat wave last week was absolute torture, my chickens almost died from heat and I was spending all day trying to cool them down. I'm so sorry about your hen, she definitely had a great life!:hugs
TY. However, she was an egg eater and an over all food hog. I’ve got a half dozen eggs from my remaining old hens since she passed. To be truthful, I don’t miss her but despite her challenging issues, she did have a nice retirement.

I used to feel that way about other predators and their young.

Until I was missing a bunch of poults. Later found wings and feet scattered about.
Not for the faint of heart.
I understand where you are coming from... I really do. And I was the same way for a long time. But I've had a change of heart in the past 5 years. I just can't fault a critter for trying to survive. I made the conscious choice to only kill them if they are sick, actively attacking a person or animal, can't be trapped, or pose an immediate health risk. We have discussed this before on here... I don't care if it's a coon, fox, mouse, snake, whatever... I trap it and release it in the state park, far from homes. I respect life and it deserves a chance...
