What did you do in the garden today?

I got a lot accomplished yesterday. Pick the first peas, only a handful, then picked another 2 cups of black raspberries, set up the first layer of climbing string for the pole beans and black turtle beans. Also picked some lettuce. I love this red loose leaf lettuce. It is really heat tolerant. I also managed to mow the backyard. Still need to do a little more weed whacking back there. My old hens, the 3 yo Columbian Wyandottes, are laying one to two eggs per day now. I still see the white moths flying over the garden several times a day. I want to plant the summer squash so I think I’ll set up hoops to hold bug netting over them. I’m trying to get more Vates curly kale planted today. The Dinosaur kale is still not doing great.

I tried some of the Swiss Chard in a salad for the first time. Definitely need to grow that again; now that it’s established it seems to be doing well too.

I don’t think I’ll be getting much if any more lettuce this summer - I did a harvest of the Brentwood to go with the Chard, and the green leaf lettuce is happily bolting. The Romaine never really did anything after transplant, it’s in the shady section and I’m wondering if it needs more sun than it’s getting.

Peas are dying off/drying up, trying to decide if I should replace them with more peas when they’re done or put in some spinach. I’ve got the melon seedlings in the same bed and I think they’d appreciate more sun but I would like a fall crop of peas. I might see if I can squeeze them in somewhere else.

I would love to have honey bees, but for whatever reason, it’s illegal, I have a bombos hive in the greenhouse, on the fields a few kilometers from home. Where the family farm is. They’re nice, hard workers, but they make no honey…

Illegal bees? I didnt know that was a thing. We live in a mostly rural county and there are hives everywhere here. Appalachia mountain honey has a high demand, but most just make it for themselves and family/friends. I think if anyone tried to outlaw honey bees, there'd be an uprising lol.

It’s like that since my country used to be socialist (quite literally a communist state) and it was not allowed, because there were people whose jobs was to make honey, and if citizens were growing their won bees, they wouldn’t need honey and the markte price of honey would drop. And it must stay steady. People would revive a certain amount of honey tags per family, and get the honey from the honey trader. That’s the same with chickens, cows, goats and some other things, but you CAN grow up to a certain amount of each, per family, not bees though. It used to be the same with vegetables and other things like vinegar. For whatever reason, it stayed the same as it was 75 years ago… but people no longer revive food tags and portion stamps, so it’s stupid.

It sounds as if your country is no longer under communist/socialist control, and I'm very glad. Maybe the laws can eventually catch up with the new freedoms afforded to you all. I certainly hope it happens quickly!

I did some air layers on trees, some bud grafts and a cutting. Something should work. Woke up tired not sure I will do much today.

I took the compost from the house to the compost pile, turned on the fans for the chickens and came back in and stood under the air conditioning vent! The humidity is so high out there I can't breathe. This might be one of those days where I only work 10-15 minutes at a time. C'mon fall, I'm sick of this weather already!

Cucumber picking, horn worm hunting and cleaning out chick brooder box.
I had put deep litter in it and found grubs and maggots on bottom in 2 places! Eww. The chicks loved them! I put just a couple inches of litter in this time!
I’m glad the horn worms returned bc chickens love them so!
This is white currant volunteer tomato plant. Grows like a weed here.

I've just given up and just feed the bugs. The bug sprays make me a jittery mess or I break out in hives. The homemade/natural stuff either doesn't work, or triggers an allergy attack too.

I won't use "regular" bug spray either... I have tried various homemade with essential oils, vinegar, etc...but nothing seems to work consistently. More times than not, I just go without....
