What did you do in the garden today?

Happy Independence Day for you! Do you have a barbecue tradition? Or what do you do for Independence Day?
When I was young, used to have a cookout and play horse shoes. Shoot off a few fireworks, until there almost was a disaster. Someone was lighting sparklers in his hand and lit the wrong one. Fortunately someone noticed before he got burned.
Yes alcohol was involved.

Nowadays I don't celebrate, except I can see the village aerial fireworks from my pasture.

We just sit out on our driveway and watch the fireworks display put on by our fire department(they also have a month long carnival during June/July) which is only about a mile or two from us as the crow flies. I particularly enjoy watching all the people driving home as they leave after the display. I don’t know, just something about only needing walk about 20’ to relax and watch fireworks as opposed to needing to drive to see them. Is this an evil thought?

I will not use OFF on my skin. Or sunblock, for that matter. I wear a loose fitting long-sleeved crew neck T-shirt, and a wide brimmed hat with a bug net over it.

I get bitten on occasion, like on the back of my hand today, by a deer fly. I'd like to try the vanilla essential oil suggestion, but first I have to find some vanilla essential oil.
I had a bad reaction to sunscreen years ago so I don’t use it. I wear a loose fitting blouse and a hat when I do outside work. My hat has bug netting attached in addition I do use bug repellent but I spray it on my hat, clothing and shoes but never directly on my skin.

The Fourth of July celebrations used to be watching a really great parade then having an early dinner cookout. Now it’s a bit more subdued since I moved here. No parades close by to see. I celebrate with a quiet / low key barbecue with DD and the grandkids. It doesn’t get dark enough to watch fireworks until after my bedtime. Also, the sulfur aroma from the firework smoke gives me a bad headache.
