sorry for your loss. I have been advised not to prefer any chickens as they somehow always die.

I know that I shouldn't but I am deeply attached to my 2 favorite hens(Darlin & Little One). I really took a liking to them because of their mellow demeanor and temperament. I still think that something either tried to attack them or maybe a rat got at them. There were a lot of feathers like they were scared for their lives. It just sucks that I wasn't here to make sure they were okay and safe.

I am also a victim of favorite chicken death. Any time I favor one, they die. I don't treat them any differently and I've even chosen chickens as favorites that aren't stupid. Death.

Thank you. I'm kinda kicking myself for not being here but my son needed me to watch the grandkids so they are definitely more important. I think what really attached me to the pullet is her color.

My oldest daughter is awesome. I was just feeling down. I live in the country, I had to stay at my son's house and no less it's an apartment. Too much light from almost every angle. One of the grandkids let the dog out and he jumped on me at around 4 am. I got the text from my husband about my chicks. I didn't know that my sweet cockerel was the 2nd one. I lost my youngest son in 2005, I am not okay. Life has a way of putting us to the test. Goodnight everyone before I actually start crying again, because my daughter gave me her permission to

I survived the planning process and now have material and cost estimated. DW likes undecided and I need a solid plan. We make it work. Gathered hollyhock seeds. I have 2 winter squash about ready to pick. Need to mow again when the dew dries.

You're amazing. What are you planting for your fall and winter garden?

I’m really short on space so I am trying to balance variety with productivity. So right now the fall crops I have planned/have started is broccoli, Brussels sprouts, two types of kale, two types of Swiss chard, beets, lettuce, cabbage, a few types of radishes, spinach, bok choy, shelling peas, and probably a few things I’m forgetting. I also have two types of cucumber (one of which is from 10+ year old seeds), zucchini, a tomato that supposedly matures in 49 days, chives, random sunflowers from bird seed that I thought would at least give me some greens for compost, and some other not normally considered fall stuff that I am too tired to remember.

And for winter it hope is for the kale and Swiss chard to do most of the heavy lifting outside. I did buy a “greenhouse” for $50 on sale at tractor supply with the main goal of growing stuff like lettuce, bok choy, and spinach in through the winter. It is tiny but I am hoping to just be able to grow something in through at least part of the winter. Late December, January, and early February might be a bit iffy with how well anything grows but our winters look like this I am hopeful (ignore the column on the right that is just how much rain we get per month)

I pulled up a few shallots and onions that had tops dropping over yesterday and have them drying on the rabbit cage. I think it's too soon to be pulling them out of the ground but I needed some to cook with. I grew these from seeds I started indoors last December. First time I had success with onion seeds.

I have some braising right now with a chicken, along with tomatoes and tomato sauce, garlic, herbs and spices and some lime juice for acidity. I'll taste it later, might need a half-teaspoon of sugar if there's any bitterness from the tomatoes.

And I have a loaf of bread baking to soak up the juice. I threw a Jalapeno pepper in the dutch oven to give it a little heat.

Cooking tip to avoid adding sugar: start your sauce with a well cooked Mirepoix (chopped onions, carrots and celery) then proceed to adding the tomatoes and spices. The carrots in the Mirepoix sweeten the sauce naturally so you don’t need sugar. Also, a little balsamic vinegar helps with bitterness that may come from the tomato skins. Just a thought.

I planted baby bok choy and 2 types of lettuce yesterday morning. Despite the heavy rainfall we got two inches into the soil it is bone dry. I’ll be watering this morning. I picked a few chocolate cherry tomatoes. The summer squash are looking really good. The cucumber plants and acorn squash are still looking good. Temperatures in the low 80’s today and tomorrow then mid 70’s for the highs next week. Great growing weather.

Can’t help with the job hunt sadly, but seed libraries are your friends! Check if your local regular library has one.
