What did you do in the garden today?

I once (years ago) had a soil test at the county fair put on by the state Ag Uni. It was $3 for a quick onsite basic test or $15 for them to take your sample back to the lab at campus for the more indepth analysis. I opted for just the basic test.

The fella that took my money and my sample checked N on the paper before even opening the baggie. I asked him why he'd done that. His answer was along the lines of "all the plants use a lot of nitrogen and our native soil doesn't always have enough".

I told him the sample I'd brought wasn't native, it was a custom blend I'd spent time researching and putting together specifically for what I wanted to grow which wasn't leafy greens.

My brother thinks I'm sometimes quick to react negatively when I think someone is being dishonest or unfair. He may be right.
For a year or two I was taking samples to Agrolab, they’re local for us. Anyway the reports were fairly detailed and specific on what my amendments should be, particularly with regard to raising our Ph. I ended up hitting a Ph of 7.1 after following their recommendations, a bit higher than I wanted. All my fault because I never mentioned what I wanted my target Ph to be and they apparently recommend Ph amendments based on a default target of 7.0🫣 Perhaps in the future my thinking will be more present, more in the moment, more attentive. Probably not but hope abounds eternal.

I don't think you were quick to react negatively. If you were paying for a test to be done, then a test should've been done...... Not just checking boxes based on assumptions.

I ripped the questionable kale up this morning and planted Burpee Vates curly kale in its place. Then I thinned the row of bok choy. I spot watered the summer squash and watered the little round bed again. Either tomorrow or Sunday I’ll add some compost to that little bed and hopefully I can get it to hold water so I can finally plant beets and lettuce. It’s supposed to be raining here right now. So far just a bunch of wind and clouds. Wah!
