What did you do in the garden today?

The size of things they can swallow always shocks me. My smallest hen who is probably only 3.5-4 pounds managed to eat an entire vole whole. Pictures of the chase (barred one is the small one)…View attachment 4210310View attachment 4210311View attachment 4210312
How do you like your BO? With the exception of one or two ours don’t want to be handled. Not unfriendly just don’t want to have the stink of human hands on them I suppose unless by accident during treat time.

She is a really good chicken. She doesn’t enjoy being handled but tolerates it well. But even though she doesn’t love being held she is also my only chicken who will sit on my lap for 15-30 minutes at a time voluntarily.

Walmart is price scamming on some things. I saw this on YouTube and found it to be true yesterday. Looking at food processors. An 8 cup Hamilton Beach on middle shelf about $60 and on the bottom shelf about $70. Same sku number. I knew it would ring up the higher price. With a cart full of groceries, you might not notice.
Did you hear about the fact that they were placing false weight tags on meats and selling them for more than they should have been. A woman bought a 2 lb.or a little more pack of meat for the price of a 4 lb pack. They've been sued and they are still doing the shady stuff. So not cool.

Got out to the garden today. Yesterday was too hot. I went out there when we got home from being gone Saturday and Sunday... And there's new gopher activity at the edges of three of my beds. Go figure. I did take photos of all the end of season sad plants. They're attached below. Then the super happy Daisy gourd by the chicken run. And a tiny Mexican gherkin.

This evening I picked tomatoes, Bell peppers, strawberries and a watermelon. Got startled by a frog. I am glad I didn't step on him.

Finally grew a market sized bell pepper! First one of this size, ever! Wooo!

I took lots of photos of the stars on Sunday night. I stayed up way too late after everyone else went to bed. The fire was warm and it was too peaceful to go to bed just yet.

Cute toad... I find them around here and take special efforts to go hide them somewhere like I'm smuggling something illegal. 😂 My chickens are like little raptors when it comes to toads.

My favorite hen... The one with the tumor on the side of her mouth... Is on her last day. 😭 That tumor has grown so large that she can no longer close her mouth or open one eye. She can no longer eat and I'm fairly certain she can't really drink either.

DH is going to put her down for me tonight. 😭😭😭 My poor poor girl. I hate that she is suffering.

So very sad for you.

Morning Gardeners I almost never pick up a bird unless I am going to dispatch it.
I talk them they do respond to my voice, they have job.
My sentiments exactly, especially with the cockerels.

I was patient enough today to watch the nestbox long enough to verify which New Hampshire pullet is the early egg layer. It was the little blue-banded one.

She's been laying for around 3 weeks now, starting at around 19 weeks. The others, at 22 weeks, haven't started laying yet but some have began to squat so they'll start laying soon.

I decided today was the day to pull up all the onions and shallots. I didn't count but it looks like around 150 yellow onions and 60 shallots, all started from seed. They are all supposed to be good keepers that store well.

Around 15 of the yellow onions sent up scapes and hadn't fallen over. I'll use those first for salsa and eating.

I'm so sad for you. My heart breaks when animals that have that beautiful personality and then we lose them. I know when my young pullet and cockerel died I cried for about 2 hours because of how truly sweet they were.

WOW that's a great haul to get. I'm still trying to figure out how to get onions to grow. I have a green thumb not black but there are some things that I would love to get growing in the garden and year after year I fail. I'm just not going to quit because I know that the only way to become successful is to try again. Eventually I will get it right.lol
