I know where you can get a couple slices of fresh homemade bread for a tasty onion sammy.![]()
Onions like a lot of nitrogen. The bulbs underground are a specialized form of leaves. Even knowing that, my success with onions has been so-so. The best year I had was 5 years ago.I'm still trying to figure out how to get onions to grow. I have a green thumb not black but there are some things that I would love to get growing in the garden and year after year I fail. I'm just not going to quit because I know that the only way to become successful is to try again. Eventually I will get it right.lol
Fly high and free, sweet girl.At least she is no longer suffering.
WOW that's a great haul to get. I'm still trying to figure out how to get onions to grow. Old hen, hatched 2017, with this year chicks. That's both sad and in the end it had a happy ending.
I started onion and shallot seeds early January this year and they grew slowly. When I set them out in the garden the stems were less than 1/8th inch in diameter. I'll soon be ordering the same varieties of seeds for next year's garden and probably start the seeds in December. When are you starting them? I didn’t find out until last year they’re supposed to be started really early - I started this year’s in February and they’re doing better than I’ve ever seen. Also my understanding is the bulbing kind are sensitive to day length, so you have to be careful how long your grow lights are on when they’re inside.
I was planning on doing some forced natural selection today after school but the long awaited rain may be ruining that for nowChipmunks won’t leave me alone. I just want to grow some plants why can’t they dig somewhere else
It’s a bit disgusting that you have such good onion harvestMy sentiments exactly, especially with the cockerels.
I was patient enough today to watch the nestbox long enough to verify which New Hampshire pullet is the early egg layer. It was the little blue-banded one.
She's been laying for around 3 weeks now, starting at around 19 weeks. The others, at 22 weeks, haven't started laying yet but some have began to squat so they'll start laying soon.
I decided today was the day to pull up all the onions and shallots. I didn't count but it looks like around 150 yellow onions and 60 shallots, all started from seed. They are all supposed to be good keepers that store well.
Around 15 of the yellow onions sent up scapes and hadn't fallen over. I'll use those first for salsa and eating.
