What did you do in the garden today?

Usually those are the Asian ladybug
Ah you know the truth that no one talks about. Asian ladybugs were imported to help control pests in California agriculture. People started collecting them and selling them. Helped them spread across the country. The elephant in the room.

Today, I processed 3 noisy roosters from my meat line. I ended up keeping a white with tan saddle one. I was originally planning on keeping an all-white one, but his crow hit a nerve, so I went with the baritone sounding white and tan one. Now I have two roosters left with low pitch crows. One from an Isa Brown line (White and brown) and the other from my Breese/Cornish x/Red Isa Brown meat line.

I found a lot of eggs under a tree, so I locked my young hens up overnight and let them out this afternoon. I found 12 eggs in their nest box after I let them out, so locking them in worked. I have a total of 7 Red Star and 3 meat cross hens. I will keep locking them in until they are trained to lay in the nest box. They should be laying jumbo eggs in a few weeks. I am really impressed with my Red Star hen's. This is my first time raising commercial egg layers. I will cross them with my Isa Brown roosters after 2 years for more egg layers. I will also line breed my meat line whenever I need to stock up on more meat.

Some of my basil needed up-potting so I did that today. Also ordered my Fish Pepper seeds since I didn’t have any luck finding those locally. This will be my first time trying Baker Creek!

What about praying mantises? A couple of egg cases collected from friends might do the trick. When I had fennel they were all over them. They drove my cats nuts through the window! Maybe planting fennel would draw them in?

Never planted fennel before. 🤔

I love fennel! It grows tall and wispy, like cosmos and the swallowtail butterflies LOVE it. As a bonus, it tastes like anise. I use it in salads, especially potato, and can't resist breaking off a sprig to chew on while working outside.

There's 2 kinds of fennel. One is for seeds and the other for the bulb
Takes forever to sprout. I was growing the bulb kind. It was persnickety about cool temperature and being kept moist

I have been eating my young Celtuce stems and leaves raw without any dressing and without having to take the skin off the stem. They kind of taste like raw asparagus and the leaves taste the same as the stem. In addition, I think they are milder and less milky than regular lettuce.

Long weekend.. Had a great time riding with family and friends. Got the call yesterday that Grandpa passed away. We were out on a trail, luckily we told everyone to get back to camp before we got the call. So we stopped and took the call, we drove for a minute while I started to wind up, we stopped, I proceeded to get out of the RZR, scream and cry as hard as humanly possible for a few minutes then I was good to go.

Still feel very heavy. But I'm done crying for now.

Got home today, we've gotten over 2"of rain. Seedlings are sprouting.
