Bulb fennel, aka "Florence fennel, or more appropriately, Finocchio (Fin-YAW-kee) is delicious, but a PIA to grow (apologies to Ba and the Zias.) Regular or "seed fennel" is super easy and will usually reseed if you don't disturb the bed on the fall. It's also GORGEOUS as a tall back-of-the-garden plant and as mentioned earlier, the butterflies love it, especially swallowtails! There's 2 kinds of fennel. One is for seeds and the other for the bulb
Takes forever to sprout. I was growing the bulb kind. It was persnickety about cool temperature and being kept moist
Luckily, I have an Amish farm stand nearby that keeps me well supplied with Finocchio, so I don't have to practice the only Italian I know - cursing. Hey, What can I say? It was the only time the elders spoke it around us kids. We weren't supposed to know what it meant, so we caught on to it REALLY quickly!
