What did you do with your flock today?

Well we got creative and a bit lazy in order to get the quail moved out of their crappy pens for something better. I opted to buy what I needed instead of building it since we are running out of free time and the rain delayed things for sooooo long. I’m happy with how it worked out and hoping it remains as sturdy as it appears to be!

This run fit exactly on top of the metal frame of the garden bed! We laid down pavers, then hardware cloth, then 70 lbs of sand, 3 cu ft of organic soil, and some pine shavings. Hoping this means no gross water/heat mixtures for maggots and keeps out rodents! Plus they will be easier to keep cool come summer since they are on soil that can drain. They seem sooo happy! 😍

Looks really good!!!

Well so far today the totals for hatches are 4 of my friends Call ducks. They are either a Blue or Black bibbed and a silver appleyard. I had my own little Call baby hatch too! And a Cemani, and a chick who I know his daddy is a Bantam Cochin but came from one of my bigger girl brown egg layers. I may never know who the momma is but I bet as this little one gets older I might be able to come close. The first 3 pics are my babies and the last 2 are my friends

I'm saving this! Definitely need to do a mini version of this... in my spare time. Hence the save.
@ChicksnMore are you blessed with soldier flies too?
Actually my compost was doing something similar but I really want to try this for fun
We are! Hoping I can figure out a home made version of that or something similar ❤️

They do look happy don't they! Such cute little guys. I tried picking up a dozen quail eggs from the Asian store to try hatching. Was reading about people doing it with happy eggs from Trader Joe's I think it was, and someone mentioned quail can be hatched that way too, so had to try just out of curiosity. Know I wouldn't want to keep any of the chickens if they hatched, but quail are little ❤️. Anyhow, none even started trying to grow.
Probably a good thing...I don't need any more birds 😂

A neighbor brought me a little bantam chick. It's mom died a while back and it was trying to get another mom to adopt it, but the hen wanted nothing to do with it and kept pecking it. Poor little thing. Guess it's been a little while. She looks stunted to me but hard to tell not knowing her breed background or age. She teeny tiny and seems oh so grateful to have a full crop and warm bed. Not sure what I'll do with her long term. Can maybe put her with Kimi's roo, Manchego when she's a little older. She might be happy with them. Couldn't make myself say no to taking her.

They’re so easy once you figure them out, and forgiving when you get overwhelmed and can’t keep up with it all. I have been feeling super guilty at the squalor their crappy pens became over the winter…so now I feel better! So long as the rats and other predators don’t manage to break in 🥴

But i also don’t have ducks or peacocks! 😆
