Those vane birds! They're wanting to look attractive for the next time, huh?I have always heard that the hen ruffling her feathers and shaking afterwards is because she is trying to fix the feathers that got out of place from the rooster breeding her.
Happy Feet! I feel silly...I heard Mumble and thought Mumbles from Dick TracyMumble looked like a penguin as a chick as well, and that's where she got her name from! Mumble from Happy Feet. That was three years ago, and we were inexperienced chicken-keepers after not having chickens for so long, so we assumed that Mumble would stay looking like a penguin. Wrong, she's all black now!![]()
I'm trying to imagine the Puget Sound region getting hot enough for heatstroke! I wonder if mines resistance to it then is more about being born and raised in this heat.Yes, thank you. Getting left one done towards the end of next month. They are just funny, dirt bathing in the sun. Moonscape in the yard. I actually lost a pullet 2 summers ago from heat exhaustion/stroke.
I've always heard the same as @PopoMyers. Shaking after is a sign of a successful mating and the hens securing the delivered package.I have always heard that the hen ruffling her feathers and shaking afterwards is because she is trying to fix the feathers that got out of place from the rooster breeding her.
Funnily I don't have any hens that do that...but I have one peahen and a goose that do. The peahens very polite about it... she just squats and looks confused when I walk by and ignore her. Goosebumps on the other hand gets mad if I don't put my hand on her back and give her a shake. If I give her a shake shes happy and goes back to her tortoise to bill his back and make soft sounds...if I don't she follows after me, bills my leg, shivers her neck at me, and honks as loud as she can.I have on pet pullet that squats for me to pick her up and then shakes it off when I put her down. She's not all there.
