What did you do with your flock today?

Here’s the dresser, I’m hoping it will be suitable for a few chicks at a time. I’m hoping to just hatch a few more of my own chicks and possibly for other people when I get the hang of it

Lay it on it's back might want to paint inside easier to clean

The first brooder I threw together out of what little lumber we had on hand... I can't quite remember the "emergency" (probably impulsively picking up chicks on the fly lol). But it worked great at about 16" high x 2.5 x 4' and the lid lifts at either side. I plan to go back to it and make it work again... Plusses are I could give the chicks grass and dirt intro. Minus is it is not real easy to cart around so I do need to improve it.

Then I decided to get serious about chickeniering and made my dream brooder. It lives outside


My DH added electric for my heating pads. I absolutely love this thing and use the heck out of it. It rarely stays empty for one reason or the other. I have since added an overhang to the front. Our weather issues are heat, sun, rain and wind.


It has helped a few of my critters in different circumstances, just scrub in between...

OK. I LOVE THAT!!! If we weren't so darned hot, with bugs and small spaces I would totally go this route... What is your plan?!!

Will you be freshening your flock? Are you adhering to city ordinances?
You have been doing this for awhile... do you ever tire of it?

I grew up with chickens so it seems like second nature to take care of them.

I will likely get 6 more next year. I am following the rules for keeping chickens in my City.

You live in a county and not a City?
Usually counties have zoning laws so keeping chickens depends on the rules for the zone you live in.

We are technically in town last road they claim or try to our private drive, anyhow but they did cut a road behind up the hill years ago

No, I don’t. I’ve considered putting them in little ponytails, but since it’s just them in their own run, so far I don’t see the need to.

im not sure yet, I was going to hatch my own eggs, which will be backyard crosses, but we just got rid of my production red rooster, who turned out to be a killer. But the EE roo is so great. Probably the first hatch will be from some eggs from a friend until my eggs are clear. It’s sooooo EXITING. I ordered it from Ali Express, and a hygrometer as well

I’m excited to see what kind of mixes you end up with! Aside from my EEs, I think I’ve only had two mixes, and only one of those was from a random flock.

That’s so cool! I’d love to have a brooder like that, but I don’t think there’s enough space here. I use a wire cage I got at the feedstore, with cardboard taped to the side to prevent drafts. It definitely doesn’t look as nice as yours does. XD

I know right?!! X2!! Well actually, it is 2 x 4' X2 and can house 30 baby chicks easy in each bin so 60 total. What do I need with 60 chicks?!! I have hatched 18, w/ a broody sitting on ?? and then paid my friend to hatch 30 but that was as close as I came to 60 and within a few days I had sold most all.

I grow out mine and long term in my mini coop that is right across the way, then main as they get close to POL. They naturally decide when it is time to go to the main coop unless I am juggling, then I nudge but never on the main roost till after they have reach POL or after. Main roost is like a rite of passage. I also have 2 XL, 1 L and 1 M dog cages too for grow out. So brooder is for 0-3 to 4 weeks, though the last 3- 3 month old cockerels loved it so the low brooder stayed their home base because I was not hatching. I just kept the door open for them during the day and they wander like the rest.
Right now I have Dusty in 1/2 of the mini and a roo in the other 1/2 lol. Beautiful juggle.
