What did you do with your flock today?

Wow! What a tall order for you. Just a thought, have you considered using real flowers on the cake? Much easier, and still pretty. You will do just fine. YouTube is my go to for many things. I'm always amazed at what instructional videos can be found there. When my hand is ready, I'll be pulling up a video on how to change out our ice maker. Samsung put in a horrible one on our model, so I bought the most recent repair part.
Amen to the horrible ice maker in the Samsung that we had also. $600 to fix it. Bought a GE this time with a totally different style of ice maker. Now we can make enough ice for processing days.

This morning I caught a young roo trying to catch a much younger pullet and put him in a coop that's 12x10 that has only 2 big bad Cornish cross roosters in it. They can't move fast put they can land a hard punch if he gets out of of line in their coop. I've got one hen acting broody. I can't imagine a hen going broody in this heat but maybe they can. She huffed up when I took eggs out from under her today and made the sounds also of a mama hen. She will be a year old tomorrow.

Neighbor came by to do a walk around of the property to care for everyone while I'm gone. Rowan's growing up, and when he waddled up to the neighbor for a hello pat, the neighbor startled. So Rowan decided to go after him. Eeks! So I showed him how to train a goose not to attack and then scooped Rowan up so he could see how sweet Rowan is. Rowan uses his head to hug you...he really is a doll once he knows you. Hope he can manage it! It's easy if you're not afraid. Hope that's enough and caring for the animals isn't too trouble some this time! Turns out the neighbor is nervous of Mojo, Rowan and Jasmine 😕.

Glad I'm only gone 5 days.

I let my chickens out to do some foraging a little late today, around 5PM. They're exploring a new area that's closer to the road out front. There's no fence, so I hope they don't decide someday to see what's on the other side of the road.

It was raining when I let them out, and I think they kind of like it when everything's wet.
When young pullets I had a threesome set made up of 2 RIR's and one Delaware that roamed at will the homestead here. They kept getting closer and closer to the main highway as they foraged. Once they started laying they stayed much closer to their coop with their Black Sex Link hubby. Now I have but one of the 3 girls left. I lost one of the RIR girls and the Delaware girl to a predator one night when they decided to sleep in a bad spot because hubby was admiring other girls. He's got me so mad with him I'm have visions of dumplings.

I found a stash of eggs that my Dark Cornish girls had in the shavings in their coop. One nest was in the corner in the shavings and one in another corner with the eggs buried. I need to get them a nest box built and then get them trained to use it. Those girls are relatively calm when I'm in the coop with them now but let another member of the family even so much as look in the door and they are really upset. The White Giant coop is next to theirs and they are so calm and a pleasure to work with. The older they get the more inquisitive they get as to what I'm doing and have their nose in the middle of it. They are finally so much better at going into the coop at sundown that I let the free range a couple of days a week. I do not trust the DC's to roost in their coop. They would rather roost with the coons than the safety of their coop. The DC's are laying much better than the WG's of the same age. They all were hatched the same date and were raised in the same brooder and ran wild together until it was time for them to start laying and needed to be kept separate until they started to molt next year. I almost sprayed one of the WG girls this morning for pooping on the hood of my John Deere while I was filling their water fountain.

Sounds like the DCs are a handful!! I’ve been considering getting some bantam Cornish because they’re so cool looking…I wonder if they’re just as stubborn and naughty? 😆 I don’t quite have the set up to handle super naughty tree sitters! Mine are more in line with your WGs and finding things of mine to crap on 😆

Last night was the kickoff meeting for the new 4-H season where everyone signs up for projects. I thought it might be fun to bring a chicken ambassador to represent our project group, so we spiffed up Wilhelm (he got a bath, a blowout, a butt feather trim, a toe clipping, and some Vaseline for his feet) and brought him :)

He was very popular and well behaved! All the young kids came to pet him 😍 The Clover Club when we joined was primarily a goat and pig project club, so when I volunteered to be the Poultry Lead the first year I had 3 kids but only Aria made it to County Fair time. Last year I was so excited because we got three others that were actually really excited about chickens so there were 5 that I managed. Last night after project sign up, if you include my two kids…I have 14 kids doing poultry! 😳 And there’s only 3 doing goats and pigs! So I am super excited to have all the interest, but also a bit stressed out by the amount of kids AND that they want to do things besides chickens 😆 So I have to learn about runner ducks and meat turkeys now too! 😆 Should be an interesting year ❤️

That is really terrific!!!! Just think, these kids are going to remember this experience for the rest of their lives ♡♡♡ ahem, no pressure, lol.
Bringing a fabulous chicken ambassador 😉👍Well done!

I have basically just been running from place to place trying to get stuff done, not being particularly efficient at anything.
Chickens get fresh water, food and a little bit fruit snacks and a tiny bit of my attention. Mostly I am on kitty feed and litter box etc duty.
I should finish setting the tile floor for kitty condo this morning. Then ride up to hang with DS and mountain flock while thinset dries.
DH picked up a few sheets of 1/2" ply for kitty shelving. That should be fun ♡

Well, off to do what I got to do while the little monster sleeps 😸💤
Have a great day all! 🌴⛅🌈

Buff Orpingtons: our Nuggets are fascinated with our jeans. We'll get a peck here and there from our others (Brahmas, Australorp, SOE) but only the Nuggets go for our jeans (and skin lol)

In photo they pecked at me for over ten minutes, even tried to scratch and climb my leg lol

Why? LOL (not actually asking just some goofy girls
