What did you do with your flock today?

That's what I did with the Dominiques, but it was an old plastic tablecloth I used on top of the dog crate brooder. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

The brooder was inside the hoop coop. If they escaped they faced the wrath of the older Sussex chicks!
I went ahead and ordered a tarp. I figured I’d rather them face the big girls and potentially get disciplined than have them run off into the abyss outside. I don’t even know how I’d catch them if that happened.

Are they sleeping out there? Is that what the roost is for or just for practice and you bring them back inside at night?

Both the Speckled Sussex and the Dominiques were brooded outside in a dog crate within the hoop coop. In that photo the pet carrier lid inside the crate was shelter to get out of the rain, but they huddled on top at night.

They're all grown now, and roost properly...

I've been meaning to talk to the manager at the grocery store here to ask what they do with the throw-away produce. I told him I had chickens and they'd appreciate the veggies. He told me they set them outside near the loading dock, and they're first come, first serve. I guess I'm not the only one looking for free chicken/livestock feed. LOL

I took a look but nothing was there. I'll keep checking and might get lucky sometime.

Been super busy lately so not a lot of time to catch up on all the posts yet! Did I mention I got some more chickens? I have a problem 😆 But to be fair, they’re a breed I Am specifically attempting to breed and show, and it was three hens!

I also decided to get serious and buy some conditioning/breeding cages for next Spring plans and the shows happening from now thru March. Traveled for work too, and catching up on missed work, running kids to soccer and band and 4-H. Next weekend is our first show since May and I will be doing chicken baths and prep between now and Thursday, the 30th. I’m excited to go and also see how some of the new kids (chickens) do showing. Some of my d’Anvers are looking quite lovely! 😍

The new conditioning pens—looks sooo small but they won’t stay in them long!

Today was also organic greens day! A nice array of collard greens, chard, rainbow chard, dandelion greens, green and red kale, spinach, cilantro, green apples, herbs, brewers yeast, Omegas 3/6 and Vitamin E, and leftover veggies from Chinese take out!

I also sat with the big run chickens and checked on the molters. Charlie and Mocha are looking a bit rough! 🤪

And last, I brought in one of the young teen chickens that I let Duchess and Daisy hatch so I could look for saddle feathers. I was sure I got 3 boys from the three that hatched and when looking at this one today it struck me that at 10 weeks it should have bigger wattles. Dug around and couldn’t find a single saddle feather! Crazy! She’s rather shy and hard to catch but then sits with you very calmly 😍 She’s half bantam Wyandotte (white with barring), half Black marans.

Busy, busy, busy! Glad you are well and it is good to see you pop up (with photos!!! 😍) congratulations on all the goodies 😆. Most exciting, another forward push with your showing goals. That must feel great. Love the "wins" when we get them ♡♡♡ Love the Watermaal friends AND the good pullet luck or pullet surprise 😉👍Very cool. Cages and paint job are terrific. Loving the designer color on your holding pens, aubergine right?!! 🍆 So fancy 💜💜💜 .

Happy Thanksgiving all! 🦃🍁🍂
For me it is more like 🐖🐟🥗🍠👍
I'll have the oven on for a little while today but, not enough to undo all of the beautiful cooling effects of a nice cold front that just came in. Nice not sweating for a bit. We are having a terrific light rain as I type.

Mountain chickens are getting Tylan 200, a LB was sneezing with congestion last eve. Was hoping to bring them down the mountain in the next few days but now I will do a wait and see.

Let the kittens out into the garden so I could get some glam shots... lol. It was more of a ferret fest. So fun to watch- hard to get updated photos. Was able to edit a few....

Video worthy stuff. They are no longer feral kittens forsure. Lots of purrs and asks for snacks. Absolute joys. Even Forest loves them

May be able to incorporate Waihona soon. She does not hiss or growl at me and seems to like and except the food and dry spot pretty well. Also curious, not hiding as much as she used to ♡♡♡

DH is doing pretty darn good almost 2 months after his catapult. Cane, little pain, ahead of PT. He even rode his motorcycle the other day. Speaking of which, I am still impatiently waiting for my new ride to make it onto the barge. With the holidays, not a good idea to hold my breath. More than happy to do my store runs on Boo.

Beetle is doing a terrific job with the homegirls. I have had to physically remove the feral broody out of the nest boxes 3 times 🙄 pretty funny being able to reach in and calmly remove her to place on an outside roost. Always a delayed freak out, surprised she comes back... but she does.

Wishing all a terrific, safe and happy day.
