What did you do with your flock today?

Went to Aldi's this morning, picked up a bag of grapes on sale.

I neglected to cut the grapes in pieces, so when I dumped them and some leftover pot roast bits on the flock dish the chickens appeared confused. I pulled out my pocket knife and started cutting up the grapes, but not before one of my boys grabbed a whole grape and ran with it... guess he didn't want anyone to snitch it!

Yesterday I was out doing annual medical visits, had a bunch of errands planned, but my car started making loud rattling noises.

So instead of running errands I left the car with my mechanic and spent a productive afternoon in the yard, setting up my two new raised beds. I kept finding insects in the dirt, and I would walk over to the coop to offer each insect by pushing it through the HWC.

Maybe that's why some of the gals sit on the perches that face the gardens, and watch?
;)

I did one run around the coop area with the lawnmower, and the flock was enthusiastic about the huge pile of leaves and winter weeds that I dumped in front of them. Martha hopped on top and sank down to her belly, wish I had a picture of it!
:gig

Raised beds are now assembled and lined with cardboard, my leaf lettuce and collards now have more winter protection, and my flock had a treat of leaves, too.

(remains of the leaf pile are around him)

And my Good Ol' Boy mechanic got the fender reattached and secured, and for a modest fee, thank you!
What lovely raised beds, and wowza, beautiful, collards! I always love having a frost or two to sweeten them up. Think I'll have to grow some next season. Too late, had too much going on in the fall. Chickens will pay attention to anyone who is a potential treat dispenser. You in the garden in a prime example. We all have "treats" written across our foreheads, or is it backsides? 😆

:barnieLava is falling from the sky, according to 6 hens. ❄️❄️❄️⛄
This was not in the forecast, but we are at 36 F, 2C. I didn't think it would stick, given we had rain this morning, but it's sticking on the tree branches, grass, and railings.
How is your weather today, and where are you, if it's not on your profile?
No snow here in SW WA, but it's been a slow, steady rain all day long today. And the temperature is doing something strange tonight- it's going up all night long and reaching a peak tomorrow afternoon at 50 degrees. I'll keep the furnace shut off tonight...

As usual I did take some time to pickup some of the Delaware hens and talk to them like they were best friends. Most of the ones that just sit calmly on the roost while I pick them up act like they are expecting it and then will sing a little song and then I can put them back down were they were. If chickens could smile I'm sure they would. Next door in the RIR coop there are girls there that seem to like the interaction and have their own little songs to sing while being held. I can hold a few of them that will snuggle and nuzzle me. All this makes a bad day a lot better.

I went down the line of pets on their roost tonight and held and talked to all of them. Most of them big roosters that felt a little embarrassed at being caught off guard. The farm watch rooster tolerates me the best and he is the best at the way he calls the hens and feeds them before he will eat. The others just chow down everyone for themself. He's a keeper. He's a cross known as a Black Sex Link. RIR x Barred Rock

It seems we will have a couple of nearly sunny days Monday and Tuesday. Wouldn't you know I'll be in the house baking cookies those two days. My timing is impeccable. But, I need to ship about 30 dozen cookies out by Wednesday, so a-baking I will go.

We are glad it's warming up and melting the snow away.
