What did you do with your flock today?

I think I’m about 40 pages behind. Did I miss anything major?

I fixed my pigeon situation and found a fantail at the HS that was in need of a home for my lonely King Louis. Her name is Duchess, to go with the royalty theme. Both of them are girls (King and Duchess) but they’ve been getting along really well so far. She such a small, delicate little bird, I love her so much. ❤️
She’s fairly friendly, too, and has let me hold her a few times.

Anyway, I’m just popping in to wish everyone a Happy New Year and belated merry Christmas!

After mowing the lawn I finally packed up 1 dog, 3 cats, 12 chickens and food etc for them plus 2 adult people. Feels good to be up Koke'e but lots of work to be done up here too. Finally getting to the clean up after the tree trimmers. Probably take a few days.

Chicks are back home. I will keep an eye on them while I am up here then ride Boo up to check till their folks get home on the 7th

What a wonderful world you live in ❤️ That mushroom is so pretty...is it an a type of amanita?

I'd never seen lavender until I got these guys. I thought the blue were lavender at first... probably because reading says lavender exists in the breed (though there's gene pool breeders from Oland that say it doesn't 🤷‍♀️ ). When I saw pics of actual lavender I was enchanted! Such a lovely color 😍.

Both mom and dad from that boy definitely carry blue. I just want to know what splash looks like in these birds...lol. Just curiosity 🙂

I traded a few chicks for a few aloha chicks and I was told those are dun birds. One looks an awful lot like a giant blue dwarf. The other three have different markings similar to some of the dwarf pics I've seen, just messier less uniform markings with no feather pattern. I think. I should go hold them and look closely 🤣 Anyway, brief reading says dun is a separate color so want to learn about that too.

Think I'm too old to really learn too much about genetics though. Would be nice to at least learn about my own
I know what you mean about being enchanted by lavender birds! I didn't ever consider keeping Pekins (bantam Cochin) until we went to pick up a Swedish Flower hen and this 8wk old lavender floof ran over my foot. That was Sylvester (Sylv), Ferdy and Penelope's dad. It was love at first sight! 😍
I miss him so much, even if he did have a very unhealthy attachment to my bare feet...🤣
The Swedish Flower hen, Lily, turned out to be the roo we had to re-home. I miss Leo every day. He's gone into the breeder's breeding programme so I do get to visit him every now and again, at least.

I think dun is such a pretty colour. There's someone over here trying to breed khaki and khaki mottled pekins from dun birds. I'm not by any means certain but I think the dun gene is related to lavender. At the very least, the gene responsible is recessive and modifies and dilutes red the same as lavender is dilute black. Blue is a totally separate gene and not a dilute shade of something else. I'm just learning (slowly) about chicken genetics. You're never too old to learn new stuff. Sometimes, it just takes longer to sink in! :he

Here's a few photos of Sylv and Leo. The photo of them together on the arm of the sofa was them waiting patiently for nachos...

Totally adorable 😍❤️😍❤️❤️

Hate fireworks! Elli is good with them. He likes to watch them out of the windows but Grace is getting scared of them as she gets older. The chickens don't seem too freaked out but their coops are soundproofed. Ferdy sometimes is startled by really loud ones but I think because he's usually on my shoulder on a night, he feels safe enough.
My SIL's dogs are absolutely terrified though and my old cat went into hiding every time one went off.
My aunt's shepherds didn't appreciate fireworks at all. She's had shepherds all her adult life and not one of them has been o.k. with explosive noises despite having exposure training. I wonder if it's a breed trait? They do have exceptional hearing after all.

You are sooooo lucky! A true piece of paradise. I'd have to be dragged away kicking and screaming...

I'm not really that old. I just feel like it lately...lol. I'll feel much younger when my 3 years to grow to do list is caught up! 🤣😖

That's too bad about Leo. Hes gorgeous. A bit like an extra flashy duckwing. He reminds me of the Olandsk dwarfs. Swedish flower birds are well named.
Totally adorable 😍❤️😍❤️❤️

My three dogs are pretty chill about them. The little one wants held but give him that and hes calm. He'd rather watch the fireworks in my arms then be set down and left inside, the goofball. And my two biggins are completely relaxed. My kids dogs shake and shiver though. My youngest has the little black n white dog and he has the hardest time. Even when held he quivers all over. Set him down and he starts panting and shaking apart. My oldest kids big dog literally wants a security blanket. Toss one over him and he's happy. What he'd really like is to be held...but hes ok with his blanket. Poor babies.

My birds have never shown any upset. They lay well the next day etc. We did have peacock startle from close thunder once and break his neck hitting the roof of his enclosure though. So I'm sure it effects at least some of them...think they hunker down instead of startling. Our horse doesn't mind them though. Fire a gun right next to her and she'll ignore it, keep eating or whatever. Leave a cement pile in the desert where it doesn't belong and she'll start prancing just in case it's the devil...lol.

We keep it to quiet little fireworks, but those artillery shell type fireworks seem to be all the rage these days. The sound from those carries a long ways and was everywhere yesterday and last night.

@TropicalBabies has the right idea...get far away where its peaceful still. Enjoy the quiet and get some work done while your at it ❤
