The cockerel never grew into himself. He is an idiot rooster IMO. Still tagging along with the girls, they still don't pay him much mind. Hopefully nature will select them another but he is chickensh*t enough to survive. They remember me and I toss them what i can. Mostly cat food.

This is the first mulch in a long time that I have been able to shovel AND in such a safe and semi convenient location such a treat!
There are a few crazy mushrooms up here. Not so much in the winter but I will have to get some photos in time and post in hopes @PopoMyers will chime in with awesome info. They all are beautiful 🥰🍄Good fun!
I'll do my best, as I have no experience with Hawaiian ones. Locality is key, as well as measurements of size, good photos of gills, stems, place they're growing, cap in different stages. A spore print if possible. (Place gill side down on paper for a day or so) Pull up mushroom and get photo of underground portion. It doesn't hurt the main organism to do this, much the same as picking a tomato.
I know you do have edible tree fungus, known as rat's ear, which grows on rotting tree bark.

Sooooo cool! I think I can scout out a few more with a possible capture. Such a treat to learn something fun and new 😁 🍄

I started this adventure maybe back in 09. Have learned to ID many we have here in WA. We have some yummy ones, like chanterelles, shrimp, lobster, pine mushrooms, boletes, helvella species (elfin saddles, which don't look appetizing, because they're black and grey). The past couple seasons have been dismally poor, the as I believe the extra hot summers may have killed off much of the mycelium and it has to recover. Very few seen, unlike previous years. I'm anxious to see what you find.

Happy New Year all!! 🥂🎉🥂

I’ve been busily using my free days to start planning the new coop! And while we are in a building mood, I’m also going to try to build a new quail area. The tiny rabbit hutches are just not ideal and the rats are eating away the wood on the front as well. I’m excited, they’ll be going from 16 sq ft to 28! Plus I’m gonna make it about 5.5’ tall, add some fake plants, a shelter, some logs and wood for hiding and a dirt floor to dig in! I think it will make them really happy 😊.

The chicken coop is going slow due to the atmospheric rivers we have coming thru. We have neighboring areas flooding, it’s SO soggy…and so I’m learning how to use my new handheld circular saw and picking out paints by building a demo coop door.

Nohope seems to very very slowly improving (but I’ve said this many times and been wrong). He is almost able to stand and his appetite and thirst are back! He also now freely eats his vitamins like a good boy. We needed to get some leftovers out of the fridge to make room for cake…🍰 So he got spoiled and had a lovely dinner of grilled salmon atop a bed of quinoa. 😆 Very spoiled 😍

He also got a bit too ambitious trying to walk and ended up flop/flying off the couch.

And last, I noticed during last nights crazy rain storm (3” in 24 hrs) JoJo looked rather pathetic via coop camera. It was almost midnight and POURING, so I hoped he was ok till today. It is our only day this week with sun! Brought him in, looked him over, and found mite or lice eggs in his beard feathers 😩 So thankfully it was discovered today and not in the miserable rain! Soo, he got a very thorough bath with Dawn soap, he got a dosing of Elector PSP, and then a warm and dry ICU bed for a couple night stay. Poor boy!

No one else had any so I don’t know why he had issues! So after he got settled, the whole family went out and cleaned out all the pine shavings, the roost ladder, and nest boxes from the big 4x8x6 ft coop. Then I doused the coop in Elector, cleaned and doused the roost bars and nest boxes. Then, every chicken in the shared run also got doused! By the time we were done with the chores, it was dark and my back was spasming. Doing what ya gotta…it was a royal pain and we all got wet, muddy, and tired but I feel so happy being able to reassemble my paver pile that holds the net boxes and blocks gaps from the outside to keep the rats out!
I love love love your quail plans! Lucky lil birds ❤️.
Hope you didn't overdo it and that your backs ok today.
How wonderful that your whole family pitched in...your raising some great kids there!
@ChicksnMore Kirin... after the beer too?! 😋🍺 as I recall it was not a bad beer especially with sushi (in a sushi bar, with friends and saki!)

@kurby22 I am excited for you and your new housing project. I'm right behind you on the major coop clean. Cool you had a family event out of the chore. Many hands 🖐👋🖐👋👋🖐.

I'm still up Koke'e but plan to make my way down by noon. We got the yard all raked and it looks great except for a few gardening spots that I will have to get back to. Also, got my truck loaded up with mulch ☑
Miss my chickens a lot. Think Princess Gracie jumped on my camera so I don't have the full view of my run anymore 😕 need to move that camera higher and also install a second camera in the run or something... need to figure that out 🤔
Also we made the hard decision to sell Cisco and I have to go down and deal with his rehoming. Time for him to have younger people 😢. Have had a few good calls so looking forward to meeting with people this week 😖 We are not in a hurry but he is a looker of a good age and got a lot of interest.

It is 6am and still pitch black here. Not much I can do without waking dh except have another cup of joe and catch up on byc.
I'm so jealous of your beautiful mulch pile! ❤️
That is a hard decision on Cisco but can certainly understand. Hope you find him a good home with lots of horse crazy youngsters.

I was on a girl scout camping trip once and a girls little brother had joined us for the day. I had the kids hunting for conk mushrooms for a project and the little guy kept pointing to every little brown mushroom he saw wanting an id. I told him those are all called LBM's and explained how hard it is sometimes to I'd a mushroom. Poor lil tyke was soo disappointed!

Have to share a picture of a king bolete my kid found on a local mountain.

Fellow fungophile? We have had tons of LBM's in the past. So I've been a little frustrated with how some of the classifications keep changing. The books I have are outdated.😢 Gladly, the mushrooms appear the same. Do you have much in AZ? These matsutaki and chanterelles are from the 2018 fall season, the last time I found any.
