What did you do with your flock today?

That’s a really great video! I admire how fast and efficient he is at removing it. Hopefully one day I can reach that level, lol.
I doubt it's his first rodeo! And it helps the bird is lightly sedated. Even so, such skill!
I'd love to be able to work so efficiently and cleanly.
Fingers crossed the baytril works alongside clearing out Molly's ears 🤞

That's a really good sign isn't it that he's trying to mate again!?
I can't believe you got another with frostbite on their feet!
I never could really tell anything for certain on mines feet...I pray they are good...they act well.
Curious as to the width of your roost bars.
Mine are a little narrow but it was a special piece I wanted to incorporate into the coop.
Silly I know...but our home church was built in the 1800s...I went there as a little girl and they didn't build a new church til 1987.
We used that old church building for many years to come until it was just too much upkeep and in such bad repair that they tore it down.
When they tore it down they allowed anyone that was interested to take pieces from the old building.
I got several window panes, nice pieces of wood and still to this day could KICK myself for not getting the old Sunday school wooden mail sorter that was 4' tall by 5' wide!!!
Anyways I digress lol since I'm not able to physically quilt anymore I took the quilt frame an older friend made me from pieces from the old building and made them into the roost bars! They are about 2½"x2½". Then the nicest piece of wood my DH made into a gorgeous shelf is what they use as their front porch!
Ok back to why I told ya all that ... I noticed the d'uccles roosting last night and they had settled down with their feet covered by their bodies but there was an inch gap or so in between their legs ...I'm guessing cuz it may be little too narrow a roost bar?
Wasn't sure if you had narrow bars or not since a couple have had frostbite on their toes.
Sorry this was so long!
I sure hope your little girlee is doing better today!

@kurby22 how are you fairing over there with all the massive flooding now. Is it still hitting you where you are at?

This weather is just insane...really makes me miss "normal" days!
I love that though!!! My grandpa owned a farm that all my aunts and uncles and mom was born in and raised on. Well my uncles were the only ones born on the farm but still pretty cool. He had to sell it because it became too much for him. But my mom got ahold of who owned the farming property, as the house was sold separate. And he told her she could get some of the wood from the old barn. I want to take her out there to get some one day as I think it would be amazing to have. There is just something about the antiques but it is so much more when your life was part of that.

I believe they got the frostbite from being outside under their coop, in the direct wind, when we got that Arctic freeze. Her toes are already worse than my Roosters are. I do have 2x4s for their roosting bars. I didn’t at first cause I kept seeing all the poles or sticks everyone was using. It wasn’t until I was looking up frostbite in the summer to be prepared for winter, that I seen that 2x4s were better. Some of them roost on top of the nest boxes which is actually like 3’ long and 1’ deep. Being that there is 2 sets of them. I’m going to be adding more this spring too as I’m adding some more chickens, hopefully.

Ok, I just considered that THE frostbite. And no, I know not to pick that off. I’m hoping that there isn’t much that falls off. But we will see. The swelling is down, in fact my husband said the other leg was bigger but I’m sure that is mostly because he uses that one to stand on all the time. I guess I just wait and see what happens. But he isn’t afraid to mate with the girls.
Good boy! Not letting it get in the way of getting his oats 🤣

It can take anything up to 6 weeks for the black to finish developing and result in the line of demarcation. This is basically the point where the tissue is healthy and hasn't been affected by frostbite. As the gangrene 'mummifies' it'll start falling off and should leave healthy tissue behind. Are you still bathing it?

It was raining heavily off and on, so not much done. One dozen eggs laid in the same box over 2 days. It supposed to be clear and sunny tomorrow. Hope to finish covering the run and rototilling the muck so it will drain. If not, may just remove a thick layer to the garden and replace with the sandy fill dirt from another area of the property. Feed replenishment as well. Time to set up the rat trap, and mole trap. It was cute to see the two roos guarding the door to keep the girls in while it rained. I had let them out earlier when the sun peeked out.
I hope that the traps work!!! By this time I would be going crazy! Fingers crossed!

I am but I am only doing it once a day. I had to drop it because he is SOO not liking me handling him. I don’t want to stress him out and at the same time I don’t want hurt either. Getting him out of the kennel is a challenge in itself. I was hoping the more I did it he would just accept it. It actually went the other way around.

Ear infections in chickens aren't usually contagious as far as I'm aware but it's wise to check the rest of the flock just in case.

Sound like it's a middle or outer ear infection if there's visible pus and given her symptoms so it should respond well to antibiotics. The only problem is which to use. If you have baytril on hand you could start her on that and see if it helps any? It is a very potent, very broad spectrum antibiotic. If not, see if your vet will sensitivity test some pus/discharge.

if you can stomach watching a vet remove pus and irrigate a chicken ear, give this a watch:

It's pretty graphic if you're at all of a sensitive disposition. Don't say I didn't warn anyone!
That video is something…for sure not something to watch first thing in the morning with coffee…I had to stop watching it. That was a lot in that ear!!

Boo has been taken apart again for new turn signals and a little paint. Front signals are way easier than the rear.View attachment 3371405
The littles and little-littles came to help me out but then got distracted by the starfruit tree 😕View attachment 3371413So fun to see them jumping up to get fruit 🤍
That ALL looks like fun! I truly believe if I had fruit trees my chickens could get to I wouldn’t have any fruit 🤣. Watching them jump for it would be awesome to see!

Definitely take her...it does mean the world to me that I was able to repurpose most of it into something I can do and luv now!

I hate your girls feet are worse!!! I had forgotten bout em standing out in all that mess. I pray we don't have anymore blizzards!!!

Oh I am. It really is just a matter of when and I don’t know the person who owns it so she would have to get ahold of him. Apparently she doesn’t remember the name but my aunt might.

They are what you would typically see in frostbite. I think that is why she had poop on her feathers. She is taking weight off of it and isn’t able to rightly poop. I will just have to keep an eye on her but she looked way better this morning. I have been keeping an eye on all their feet but I think because there are 2 of her, I might have thought I seen both of them but really only seen one. They aren’t easy to catch to look at. But I’m going to do a soak for her feet, dry them up and take her back outside. I don’t think she is so bad that she needs to be in. I will try to get some pics of her toes.
