What did you do with your flock today?

Today was a nice day, no wind, so we took our four 5 week old chicks outside for fun! It was the first time my 4 year old got to be there since they only went outside this past week. He loved it watching them dig in the dirt and eat bugs!

We are upgrading and revamping our coop setup. We originally had a 12'x20' fenced in roofed carport with a 7'x6'x8' house made from recycled pallets for our chickens and had purchased the tractor supply expandable retriver kennels last year for our ducks. My 2 female white muscovey's have a 11'x11' roofed kennel complete with external house which we insulated with tarping for wind protection and all side panels are covered with the all weather panels which we roll up when weather permits. My male muscovy has a 5'x10' roofed kennel complete with external house and all weather panels and the chickens now have a 11'x11' kennel to match the female muscovy's. I am in the process of building a new external house for the chickens because we took on another 4 chicjs this year in March and needed them to have more room. All 3 kennels have front door opening allowing for free range during the day now as well. I absolutely love these kennels and would highly recommend them to anyone needing something with relatively easy setup and versatile for a multitude of animal uses. Here are some pictures of our in process renovation.
Before during and after.

Just updating..... Here are pictures of the new one. We just have to finish putting the hinges on the door, some more roots and then it is complete. This one only took us 5 days and was 100% free most of the wood was given to us by my ubcle who just had his porch remodeled. The frame was from zero turn tractor pallets. The odds and ends were repurposed from the old coop. The girls are so happy they immediately got in and hopped up to their new roost and nesting box.

Yesterday we moved the chicks into their coop and spent some time with them feeding them snacks and watching. Then, we left them alone. Last night I went in to check on them and they were all in their sleepytime cuddlepile.

Went in this morning and they were happily eating and peeping and being chickens! Husband is going to be building a small perch for them to roost on but I'm glad things are going well.

Going to stop in later today with their snacks. I'm excited!

Great looking coop love the reclaimed wood factor

I gave the kids (4 week olds) a fresh ear of corn and they demolished it amazingly fast. Looked like those old movies of piranha attacking a cow. They also got a big handful of cabbage looper caterpillars which set off a big keep away chase game. Tomorrow I'll remove the fence preventing them from getting under the coop. They stand and stare at the alfalfa growing there like kids looking in a candy store window.
