What did you do with your flock today?

Nice looking birds kinda bummed been loosing my older birds .. One here or there not all at once but turning 7
I am down to 13 in the main coop .. Also went to one rooster Smudge
Sorry to hear the penny, 7 years is a long time for a chicken relationship. Must be pretty bittersweet as I am sure the gals may be suffering a little. Well, those birds could have done far worse so pat your self on the back for the good life you provided them. :hugs

Well, never say never! I picked up 2 light Brahma chicks from the feed store today. AND put in a bigger order for July but may have to look elsewares as this feed stores hatchery is in Texas and they took a big hit with the February 2021 Texas Freeze/Power Crisis. Poor guys is all I can say. So they are trying to build back up and probably wont have the breeds I want and said I would never order again. Maybe the dork running USPS will be gone and replaced with a sane person soon :fl

Lol! Jerry is a man possessed when it comes to gray hairs.:)

They are all poof butts aren't they? Lol!
The younger ones will be a year old in August.
The older flock is staggered, Lulu the big faverolles is four as is Hobo the Dom.
Their rooster Prince and his three and two half sisters are two.
Renee,Ethel and Dutch who are the mothers of those are three.:)
Wow! I’m a little jealous, lol. Mine are a little over a year old, and so far they’re not nearly as fluffy as yours are. I’m hoping they’ll eventually get bigger, but we’ll see.

I’ve been trying to let the new guys out a few minutes before the others, and so far there hasn’t been many issues. There’s a little fighting still, but for the most part everyone minds their own business. The new four are getting more comfortable exploring the yard, and I no longer have to show them how to get back to their coop, or where the water is. :yesss:

They’re so sweet. They love hanging out with people, and they’re always chasing after me when I go outside. Everyone seems so much happier, and even my old girls are starting to enjoy hanging out in the other coops/nests. After being beaten up a few times, Puff Puff has started to mellow out, and she’s been ignoring them.

My plan is to eventually build another small roost, and then get everyone switched over to the big coop. I think it’ll take at least a few more weeks until that happens, but there’s no rush. When I do eventually get them switched over, that’ll free up two coops, one to upgrade my Polish, and the other will get added to the faverolles to expand their run.

I have a feeling Elphie is going to eventually be top hen. She’s been involved in most of the major fights, and even when she’s up against two other birds, it still looks like she’s the one winning before I break it up. Yesterday I was hugging Molly (who I think is the lead hen, though I’m not sure. The pecking order has been really complicated since my eldest hen died last year.) and Elphie came up, and scared her away. How that happened, I don’t know.
She used to be at the bottom of the pecking order, so this is kinda surprising.

I haven’t been doing anything special with Iris recently, aside from daily bandage changes. He stopped getting antibiotics on the 23rd/24th, but his feet are still getting better.
these are from yesterday.

Happy Memorial Day all!!!

Wow, Iris's foot is looking much better than I thought- like you are in the home stretch- so congratulations!!! (touch wood)
As usual your babies look beautiful. I'm sure their disagreements with each other is probably just over who is the prettiest because they are all so very pretty. :love

It is WARM here. We did get a little lucky and have had some cloud cover off and on and that is helpful but the chooks are all under the house in the BIG sandbox hiding from the heat.
I have Ivan out of his coop wandering. Spider seems to be able to keep him under wraps pretty easily. Bolt will get his time out this eve and so it has been going like that without any big incidences for the last week or so.
The littles got upgraded to the mini coop and "free range". I'm letting Ivan babysit them- one of his tests to see if he is a good roo or not and well, he is doing pretty good.
Oh, and I picked up 2 light Brahma chicks a few days ago . Did I mention?

I was slow to set my eggs... should have done last eve but I did it this morning and they are due to hatch on Wednesday. Ooops. It is so warm and humid here I am sure it is not too much of a snafu. :fl
And I bribed DH with a sandwich so he would make me a few doors- little doors... one for the old brooder and a summer door for the main coop nest box. Something that will breathe better.

And a few of the littles first big day.

I did a little trading mangoes for lettuce and tomato starts yesterday so hopped in the garden after I let the girls clean out the boxes this morning.

2 have hatched with 5 more pips. 20210601_112139.jpg
My/chooks new summer nest box door. So far it does not work. They are all yelling at the barn. I was sure the fresh nesting materials would suck them into giving it a try... but not yet.

Guess I need to rake some leaves lol

This mornings kitten adventures. At night these two have been running around like crazy, total belly laugh. Even Batman has gotten into a little play with them.
