I’ve been trying to let the new guys out a few minutes before the others, and so far there hasn’t been many issues. There’s a little fighting still, but for the most part everyone minds their own business. The new four are getting more comfortable exploring the yard, and I no longer have to show them how to get back to their coop, or where the water is.
They’re so sweet. They love hanging out with people, and they’re always chasing after me when I go outside. Everyone seems so much happier, and even my old girls are starting to enjoy hanging out in the other coops/nests. After being beaten up a few times, Puff Puff has started to mellow out, and she’s been ignoring them.
My plan is to eventually build another small roost, and then get everyone switched over to the big coop. I think it’ll take at least a few more weeks until that happens, but there’s no rush. When I do eventually get them switched over, that’ll free up two coops, one to upgrade my Polish, and the other will get added to the faverolles to expand their run.
I have a feeling Elphie is going to eventually be top hen. She’s been involved in most of the major fights, and even when she’s up against two other birds, it still looks like she’s the one winning before I break it up. Yesterday I was hugging Molly (who I think is the lead hen, though I’m not sure. The pecking order has been really complicated since my eldest hen died last year.) and Elphie came up, and scared her away. How that happened, I don’t know.
She used to be at the bottom of the pecking order, so this is kinda surprising.
I haven’t been doing anything special with Iris recently, aside from daily bandage changes. He stopped getting antibiotics on the 23rd/24th, but his feet are still getting better.
