Hi everyone. We've had more excitement around here. The doeling we had decided wasn't pregnant...turned out she was. This morning DH went out to feed the dogs and goats/sheep while I went to let the pterodactyls out. I hear DH call out from the barn "Um...Honey...did you know we have a baby goat?" I flew to open coop doors and then left the free birds to their own devices. The sweetest little baby girl was just wobbling alone at the entrance to the barn.
When I got to the barn, baby was soaking wet, 30°F this morning, and mama was very against baby coming near. I grabbed baby up into my coat, took her inside and dried her off, gave her to DH who was now inside, and went to set up a dog crate in the barn....hoping if I put them together, mama would do mama things. But mama was having none of it. So I held mama's horns and spoke gently to her while baby got at least some colostrum. I wrapped baby in a towel and sat outside amongst the herd. The LGDs were very protective of baby and made sure I wasn't hurting her. Mama watched, but horned baby away if baby got near. Then I called the local farm supply store and asked if they had stuff for us to bottle feed...yup...so gave baby to DH to sit outside in the herd with her and I rushed to get everything.
When I got back, mama was sniffing and licking baby. And within about 3 hours, mama was letting baby nurse. So all is well and everyone on our little farm is completely in love with this new little girl.
Tonight and tomorrow are supposed to get down into the low teens, so I set up the double giant dog crate in the garage, stuffed it full of straw, added a hay basket, water, grain and at dusk added mama and baby. They'll be snuggly warm in there for tonight...let them out for the daytime tomorrow, and then back in the safety and warmth of the crate for the night.
So, now....introducing little baby Domino:
