What did you do with your flock today?

Hi everyone. We've had more excitement around here. The doeling we had decided wasn't pregnant...turned out she was. This morning DH went out to feed the dogs and goats/sheep while I went to let the pterodactyls out. I hear DH call out from the barn "Um...Honey...did you know we have a baby goat?" I flew to open coop doors and then left the free birds to their own devices. The sweetest little baby girl was just wobbling alone at the entrance to the barn.

When I got to the barn, baby was soaking wet, 30°F this morning, and mama was very against baby coming near. I grabbed baby up into my coat, took her inside and dried her off, gave her to DH who was now inside, and went to set up a dog crate in the barn....hoping if I put them together, mama would do mama things. But mama was having none of it. So I held mama's horns and spoke gently to her while baby got at least some colostrum. I wrapped baby in a towel and sat outside amongst the herd. The LGDs were very protective of baby and made sure I wasn't hurting her. Mama watched, but horned baby away if baby got near. Then I called the local farm supply store and asked if they had stuff for us to bottle feed...yup...so gave baby to DH to sit outside in the herd with her and I rushed to get everything.

When I got back, mama was sniffing and licking baby. And within about 3 hours, mama was letting baby nurse. So all is well and everyone on our little farm is completely in love with this new little girl.

Tonight and tomorrow are supposed to get down into the low teens, so I set up the double giant dog crate in the garage, stuffed it full of straw, added a hay basket, water, grain and at dusk added mama and baby. They'll be snuggly warm in there for tonight...let them out for the daytime tomorrow, and then back in the safety and warmth of the crate for the night.

So, now....introducing little baby Domino:

Good morning. Oh my Adorable baby goat !
How can they be so cute, Like a puppy!
This has to be the cutest goat I have ever seen. Just perfect in every way ♡ Super glad it latched on and mama came around to her responsibility. I mean, be a shame to have to bottle feed and house keep that little cutie. Lol.

@ kurby love the wheels- super cool!!

Aloha gang!
I gotta drive dh to eye docs so let the ladies out to wander and flutter early so I can lock them up when I go. They are still being pretty perfect giving me a record egg day this season with a cool dozen yesterday out of 13 layers and catching a few slow lizards this morning hence helping to rid the yard of an invasive species invasion. Good girls.

Going to pick up some food stores plus fill his tank then next time think we will take the bus. Wish we could this time.
K. Stay well all.

I think mama may have had a one night stand with a cow. I swear Domino looks like a teeny weeny calf. We've got them in the double giant crate til Sunday...no breaks. The snow started WAY earlier than forecast and it won't get above freezing til Sunday morning. A lot of people put their does and newborn kids in a 5x5 stall for a few weeks. So a few days in a 3x10 crate won't harm them. I'm on poop clean up duty though. 🤦‍♀️ I dont know why poop cleaning is always my job. Ugh!

Definitely super cool. @kurby22 I'm so glad you were able to do that for her!

My babies are busy in the brooder tossing out pine shavings and emptying their food dish basicly making a shameful mess. By the time I got home from dh's eye doc appointment it was atrocious.

They say 'hi!' BTW.
So I set them up in the play brooder so I could clean out their pen and noticed Manono lurking.

She ran around and around the box completely obsessed for about an hour. When Forest showed interest in the chicks she went to protect them even though Forest likes to chase her and she is pretty terrified of him.

Definitely awesome chicken behavior? Or would she have beat the crap out of them if there was no wire inbetween as the lowly in the pecking order does to anything lower. I may experiment some tomorrow to see if she is kind and nurturing. Anywho. Kind of cool ♡

So cute. Yeah. I would've wondered the same thing...maternal or predatory 🤣 And what a sweet ride you have! That'll definitely come in handy when gas prices require a 2nd mortgage just for a trip to the grocery store.

I love that your cats live harmoniously with your chickens. We have two inside cats and they would happily eat a chicken if given the chance. They sit at the windows and cackle. I think in reality, the chickens would kick their @$$es, but the cats at least think they're warriors. 😉

I think she (haha) is from a cinnamon mom (RR x RW or Wyandotte? ) and DB x Ameraucana daddy. First time getting chicks from those girls and all are completely different but cute. I must be getting old 😂 cuz I am more attached to chicks I can't keep. This batch seems a little extra cute or I'm extra old. Always a bit of a softie for barnyards anyways 🙄😅
