What did you do with your flock today?

Aloha gang! So good to hear about all of your adventures! I am a visual learner so need photos of new Ameraucana's, PJ'S chicks all the planted fruit trees (etc, etc, etc!)
Lots of work you got going on @GoatsandGuineas dont over do it if you have not already.
So fun coming home to babies and eggs. Glad you are back safe @kurby22 .

I have been working around the house and yard. Got some bromeliads planted in the news pots after leveling and filling with chicken run dirt (lol) compost and mulch. Let's hope dh does not run them over. View attachment 3032824View attachment 3032826
Been cleaning and sanding my old teak chairs, all will just be maintenance after today if I make it out to work on them.View attachment 3032829View attachment 3032830
Chicks are soooooo cute and fun. But ready to give them some outside time with the flock under my watchful eye.View attachment 3032831
And flock is terrific as always ♡ how's all them butts up?View attachment 3032838and this action shot lol. Koa's brother rounding the corner on 2 wheels, pullet running for her life and Manono calmly visiting with the chicks. LolView attachment 3032840
Since I am sure you are wondering. He cornered her in the nest box where I kindly was able to capture him and sequester him to his garden area. Horney little buggah.
I love your pictures today!! Especially the fluffy butts and action shot! 😆 Your bromeliads are beautiful too. They make me think I’ve my sister, she always had several of them in her house. I work with plants but can’t keep them alive ever hahaha. TJ had a green thumb for house and landscape plants. Manono looks like a mellow sweetheart! Also between you and @GoatsandGuineas are making me feel very lazy with all your planting and building and improvements! 😆😆

I will have pictures of the Ameraucanas by the end of the week! Picking up the young grow outs on Wednesday and probably getting the young hen on Friday.

I also learned a valuable lesson about eBay today! I was debating getting a few more hatching eggs since my d’Uccle eggs didn’t hatch too well…and put bids on a couple different eggs before settling on 6 self blue d’Anver eggs. Well apparently you cannot UNbid once you reach a certain amount of time left on the auction. You can be OUTbid…soooo I may end up with a few more eggs than planned 😆 I’m now going to get the 6 d’Anver eggs, 9 bantam EEs and if not outbid…6 bantam buff Brahma eggs! 🤪 I figure with shipped egg hatching rates it’s not a crazy amount of eggs…but I don’t have room if more than half hatch! Sooo I will be selling some chickies! :-D

DH and I had to go to Kilauea on Friday and had lunch watching these cute goats and feeding feral chickens.

So many babies and it was wonderfully fun but my photos just did not capture the beauty very well. Sorry, I'll have to try again 😉🐐
Picked up some plants to freshen the yard and have been trying to get things wrapped up for the kids visit so they don't thing we are lazy loser parents and worry about us lol. Can't keep up with @GG though... omg. Can you imagine that list of to-dos?! 🤦‍♀️
Well, I guess spring is in the air!

In the Websters dictionary you can find this picture of @kurby under the definition of chicken math lol 👇. (Which is a absolute terrific photo ♡♡♡)

You got some juggle going on there miss K. You even have me wondering how you do it. And then with young people and soccer games... :thimpressive!

Morning If all my eggs hatch 20 in the incubator. 2 under a silkie. Plus the 4 boys from the last hatch.
3 of them and all the others go to auction as soon as they feather.
Pretty darn awesome @PJ wish we had auctions. 🤔 Went to a livestock auction in Colo a few times. Serious business. Love photos if you can. ♡

Hi all. Too many updates to properly respond to everyone, so I'll just say I'm excited about all the new additions, both those already acquired and those waiting to be hatched. Looking forward to photos of everything (hint hint).

The forecast light rain turned into a torrential downpour here. More trenches dug to drain the water off the lawn. The flock didn't care though....they were all out exploring as soon as I opened the coop doors this morning. The trees withstood the high winds and the corn looks happy in the raised pallet bed (time will tell if this experiment ends up working), but the lettuce and collards got absolutely pummeled in the deluge. Luckily I had more seeds, so I put more out just in case. I'm taking a "use what ya got" approach. Old kiddie pools with holes, old troughs that don't hold water, feed bins, cattle panel tunnels, corded row supports, etc. We'll see what works and keep those for next year and either scrap or improve upon less successful experiments.

I now have the tricky task of figuring out how to protect the plants and still open the area to the chickens so they can eat the bugs and help keep the grass low. I've surrounded some things with chicken wire, but I can't do that with everything. Last year they were good with the tomato plants, but those were already well established before I got the ex-bat reds. I'm thinking I may have to keep the veggies off limits until they've grown enough to not be destroyed by the birds. Some things (lettuce, for example) will have to be protected all summer of course, but larger climbing plants will be ok once they're bigger. Which kind of sucks, because I was hoping the birds would help reduce the frequency I need to mow. April through the end of June his a frantic race to keep things mowed ... until July hits and suddenly there's no rain and the race becomes one of trying to keep things alive.

My SIL and her husband are coming to visit with their granddaughter. I saved a few dozen eggs for them so they'll have Easter eggs the natural way 😉 ... plus, it will help me reduce my overflow of eggs. Win win ... LOL

I still have the berry bushes to plant, but overall, I'm happy with my progress. Nothing else can be transferred outside now anyway, so patience will be the name of the game for the next two weeks.

I haven't taken many photos while working on the planting, but here's a small glimpse of the progress:

Ooooooh boy, there’s been a lot going on here. I really need to catch up. XD

The babies got moved permanently outside, and then a few days later (once they were able to put themselves to bed) they were let out to free range. I also let the SFs to free range, and so far it’s been going pretty well. The “new guys” (babies and SFs) are tiny, so I’ve been trying to keep an eye on them to make sure Iris doesn’t crush them.

The SFs still love the babies and haven’t started any fights, but the babies have attacked them a few times. Each time the SFs have given them a gentle peck to send the babies running. XD
Watching the SFs free range is still so weird to me. They’ve been penned up for as long as I’ve had them (so about 1 1/2 years) and everytime I see them out I’m like “OH NO THEY ESCAPED” before I realize that yes, they’re allowed to be out. :lau

They were always so feral, that was the main reason I never wanted to let them out. I was worried they’d fly away and never come back. I then started considering letting them out an hour or two before they go to bed (I’ve never once had issues with them around bedtime), and then the babies escaped so I figured it was better to integrate four birds into the main flock than two.
Honestly, if I knew how chill they’d be, I’d have done it sooner.
Both of them come running to me now, even Santa. Nikki is especially fond of me and their newfound freedom. And despite looking weird running around, they look niiiiiice.

I also made Os a new saddle, cause she’s Iris’ new favorite.
